+robotman Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 (edited) I just got CacheMate and still trying to figure out how to use some of the features. I did read the README.HTM file that downloaded with the program, but may have missed a couple things. Can someone help me with these questions: 1. When I am in record view and hit the button to sort by Waypoints, the list appears to rearrange to what I guess would be in waypoint alphabetical order, BUT the cache description is still displayed NOT the actual waypoint names. I don't understand why you would want to sort by waypoints if the waypoints names aren't going to be displayed. Is there a way to show the waypoint names in record view? 2. When I used CMConvert and then hot sync, everything works ok, but all the caches come into CacheMate as Unfiled. Is there a way to actually import the caches so they get filed into 'found' or 'not found'? Otherwise I have to go through every single cache and manually file it. 3. Can someone explain how the plugin for Magellan uploads work? What sort of cable would I need? Is there a way to select and send a set of waypoints to the SporTrak? 4. Is there any sort of mapping plugin that would allow you to overlay a waypoint on to a street or topo map on the palm? 5. How does the Graffitti 2 selection work? I can write the first letter and the list goes to that, but the help file makes it sound like you can write up to 20 letters in a name. Maybe it's a timing thing that I'm not getting. Thanks! +Learned Gerbil Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 1. - Go to preferences and tell it you want to see waypoint info in the list. 2. - When you import there is a pop-up that asks you to tell it what category to file them in IIRC. 3. - The plugin transfers waypoint info to your Magellan if it is compatable. You need a serial lead for your Magellan, a serial lead for your palm and a null-modem connector (both think they are trying to talk to a computer not to another serial device so you need something that swaps the send and receive wires over). 4. - No plugin for this, but yo ucan get al lsorts of mapping software that will run on palms. It may depend on which part of the world you want to use it in as to what will work best for you. There are whole websites devoted to pda mapping if you search Google. 5. - My Palm uses the original Graffitti so I have no idea if there is adifference. As with all lists keep on writing and it should scroll tothe right place. IE - if I write A then B it goes to the first cache that starts with the letters A and B. As with most Palm applications yo ucan't necessarily see what you are writign when dealing with lists - although I have seen some applications do it differently by taking up screen space. I hope this helps. Quote

If you wait more than a second or two between each character, than it is going to reset and make the next character be the first in the name or waypoint (whatever it's sorting by) that it's searching for. Otherwise, each character entered will add to the search term, up to 20 characters. Quote
+robotman Posted December 29, 2003 Author Posted December 29, 2003 Thanks for all the info. I'll have to look into getting a serial cable that can connect the SporTrak to the Palm. Anyone know of a pre-made one? I think I'm still a little slow on grafitti which may be the problem. I'm probably not writing my characters quite right, so it doesn't recognize them properly. I'll practive a bit more. I still can't find how to file the caches when I import them. My converted GPX file has both 'found' and 'not found' caches in it, but they all go to 'unfiled'. Exactly where do I find the option to file the caches appropriately?! Thanks. Quote

Assuming you have the latest version of everything, when you put an import file on the PDA through Hotsync, when you start CacheMate it should pop up a dialog box telling the name of the file and asking for a category to put the records in. It's been working that way since June, at least as far as the category selection The key to separating the caches into the right categories is in the file converter... you can filter caches there into import files that contain only those that you've found or not found. Starting with version 3.0 (Nov. 4th), you're able to install multiple import files on the PDA at once (as long as you name them differently) and CacheMate will prompt for a category for each one.
