+BeachBuddies Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Top Ten Things I Like About Winter Geocaching 10) Less interference from the tree canopy. 9) There's no reason to make a lot of noise when you're hiking in bear or rattlesnake country. 8) No DEET. 7) You can find a cache a week after it was posted, and still have a chance at being the FTF. Well 2TF, if you live near GaiterMan. 6) You're not as likely to get your jeep stuck in the mud when you take it off-off-road. 5) The hornets are a lot slower. 4) You don't need a boat for level 5 water caches (just an ice-saw, and a dry suit). 3) Fewer geo-muggles. 2) You can use your hiking staff for hiking, instead of constantly waving it in front of you to knock down all the spider webs. And the number one thing I like about winter caching: 1) Hypothermia is a less painful way to go than heat-stroke! Quote
mufasa1023 Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Fire and Ice by Robert Frost SOME say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it had to perish twice, I think I know enough of hate To know that for destruction ice Is also great And would suffice. It looks as though Frost might disagree with #1 Quote
+MarcB Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Was exactly is DEET? (or DOOT or whatever it is!) MarcB Quote
+welch Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Was exactly is DEET? (or DOOT or whatever it is!) MarcB DEET, N-diethyl-m-toluamide, is the important part of the bug spray (well most anyway). DOOT is whats in UMC's bucket Quote
+BeachBuddies Posted December 26, 2003 Author Posted December 26, 2003 Although very effective (vs bugs), DEET will melt anything made of plastic. I really messed up the finish on a few of my Swiss Army knives just by handling them after putting bug lotion on. Makes you think twice about using it on your skin -- though there are a few places I wouldn't go without it. Quote

What I like best about caching in the winter is the 60 and 70 degree weather! Quote
+BeachBuddies Posted December 26, 2003 Author Posted December 26, 2003 Reason #11: You don't have to add ice to your hydration pack. Quote
+Olar Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Cache finding is a whole lot easier when following tracks in the snow made by the previous finder. Cheers, Olar Quote
Bender Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Doot attracts bugs, Deet repels them. Bender Quote
+Brian - Team A.I. Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 So the bugs must find themselves in quite the quandary when umc is out caching I suppose. Quote

+wray_clan Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Top thing about winter caching: Southern California has no snow. Quote
Captain Chaoss Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 Top thing about winter caching for me is a clear night with a full moon. The snow reflects the moonlight so much, the whole world turns to a fantasy land. Get a group of cachers together, pack some sandwiches and cocoa, bundle up REALLY warm, and you end up having a cache trip that you'll treasure forever. Quote
+mozartman Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 great thing about winter caching in central AZ is that it is 60 or 70 instead of 110-120 degrees. and that's a GREAT thing! Quote
Black Mage Posted December 26, 2003 Posted December 26, 2003 I got a new Garmin Legend for Christmas and was going to hit a few caches to breeak it in, but in the last 24 hours we've gotten about 18 inches of snow (yay! ), and they're predicting more snow through tuesday. So it'll probably be a few days before I can test my GPS, at least until it stops snowing long enough to allow me to get a possitive satellite lock. Quote

BTW, my Grandmother was from Goodland, KS Oh, we get plenty of heat here.....string upon string of 100 plus days, and 80% humidity to go with it. Goodland? Ha, the worst name for a town when it comes to weather! When the rest of the state is sunny and warm, Goodland is cold and rainy. When everyone else has snow, it's 60 and sunny there. The way most people see it around here is that Goodland gets the worst first, and the best after the rest. Quote

TahoeJoe Posted December 27, 2003 Posted December 27, 2003 Snow makes some caches easier to reach such as ones where you have to hike through thick underbrush. Quote
