I was on the other site and noticed a member over there using our IP address as his signature. Isn't that illegal to display an IP address of another member?

I am not sure if this is a sick joke, and also wonder who is is on it. I was all for Navicache, but if I don't get an explanation soon, I will delete every single post and picture on that site. :D:D:D

That's just plain disturbing!

There were one or two geocachers who used the same signature graphic here in the forums. It captures information which your computer spits out to identify itself to the internet, and spits it back at you. Everyone sees their own IP address, etc. in the little window.

Vehement complaints such as the one posted above by upinyachit were among the reasons why signature graphics were banned in the Groundspeak forums.

No one is seeing that information but you. It's easy to write a little bit of code that will display the viewer's IP address (and possibly other things) in their display.

But others don't see it. What they see has their IP address and info.

Your IP is often logged for posts, most often no one sees this but the admins, but they do know where you were coming from should they decide to try and block you. I do know some sites *will* display and record your IP on postings for the purpose of discouraging inappropriate postings, but those are fairly rare.

Also, there's really nothing illegal about it. Rude, maybe, but not necessarily illegal.

KA, is there anything you don't know? :D

Just curious, not wanting to start a war or anything, but why are you posting all of this here, if the problem is on Navitrash?

Is it the forum moderator thinking like Sparky Watts, or Sparky Watts thinking like a forum moderator? In either case, I'm quite frightened.

But he's right. Post over in the Navicache forums that you don't like this. It will perhaps start a discussion similar to the many topics you'll turn up if you use this forum's search feature for the keywords "IP Address." (I say "similar" discussion because only five people will participate in it.)

By the way, it is nothing that the site itself is doing, so PLEASE don't delete all your caches and forum posts. It will only cause more work for the Admin over there to restore later on when you calm down. At most, you could be upset with them if they refuse to prohibit signature graphics. The Admins at this site took quite a bit of heat for that decision, so another site's Admin could reasonably reach a different conclusion.

Yikes...that is scary!

I was going to suggest the same thing, upinyachit, but wasn't sure exactly what your purpose was in the forums here.

He's not displaying your IP address to the world, only to you. If I look at his signature it display's my IP address. Its really no big deal and certainly not an invasion of your privacy.

Blocking signature graphics really isn't a solution either since the code snippet can easily be included in the message body, much as people did with their Keenpeople stats when TPTB blocked graphics from signatures, which IMHO was the real reason for blocking prohibiting signature graphics on this site.

I guess April Fool's day can be any day I guess. The joke's on us. Everyone who sees it will see their own IP address. We formally apologize, but geez, some would take it seriously, you know. We were ready to delete everything we had and get rid of our tower!!! LOL

We've been punk'd! :D

Firewalls do some funny things when some people post to these forums........

I'm not a techie, but I know many of you are, so I'll ask this question.

Assuming that you're using a good firewall and have the appropriate security options selected (or deselected), why does it matter if someone knows your IP address; especially since it can change from day-to-day?

As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't. It appears to be pretty much a non-issue.

Assuming proper security is in place, it isn't much of an issue.

However, it can be in issue if you're doing something illegal, or otherwise wrong somehow, like surfing the internet for entertainment purposes on company time.

On a strictly personal note:

I don't understand the original mindset that prompted the posting of this information here. Couldn't the same answers been received on the other site where the supposed transgression happened?

I am reminded of the willful child who having gone out on his own runs back to the safety of the family at the first sign of problems.

Just my personal opinion.

Why personally attack the guy for expressing his privacy concerns here? I would think that as a moderator you, of all people, would know better. :D I've seen the same thing on forum postings on GC so it is a valid topic to bring up here.

I think the graphic had it's exact intended response, to make somebody freak out because they think somebody cares enough about them to use their IP address as a sig to all of their posts.

Never thinking to question why somebody would want to do that, but coming up with the most paranoid conclusion, with no information to support it.

So, upinyachit, what exactly did you put in one of your first posts that keeps trying to access my computer everytime I open this page? And don't say there's nothing there, because my firewall has traced the port scan.....I have nothing to hide on my computer (except the kiddie porn and list of my current drug dealers' addresses), but I have a firewall just so some bozo can't look at what games I prefer to play or who I prefer to send email to. Is posting something of this sort any different than what you are complaining about?

Sparky, Im not getting any hits when I view that post. Perhaps its on your end. Or a bit of spyware has attached its self to your computer?

I get a warning from my browser that says I am "about to go to an address containing a user name".  It tells me the user name and server in question.  A look at the source for the page shows an img src tag that contains an FTP link.  Maybe this is what canadazuuk was talking about?

Yup....pretty much the same thing here. Happened a few days ago with one of their posts, also.

Edited to add: I have my spyware killer delete spyware every 15 minutes, so it's not that, either.

Seeing your own IP address does not indicate a security risk of any type. You give this information to every site you visit. The graphic from testmyfirewall.com or danasoft.com are not harmful in any way and display only your information to only you. Helpful if you need to find out your external IP address for gaming, etc.

That little bit of scripting always throws SOMEONE for a loop, which is why it's still popular. Overall, it does nothing to present your information to anyone besides yourself. But if you think that's bad, you should have seen the doors that were opened by CodeRed and CodeRed II back in 2001.

I had to deal with enough of that crap from hackers when I was a chat room host....that's why I've got a firewall now....and a really, really big gun! :D
