Geocache Secret Word -

I'm sure this has come up before. How do you recognize another cacher when you see them on the trail?

Yesterday I met 2 people on the trail within 40 ft of a cache on the 1st day it was listed. Convinced they were cachers, I dropped a few hints, mentioned a few things from the cache notes but they didn't bite. I walked away, potentially giving up a FTF, on the chance they were muggles. Turns out they were there just for the view and I was the first to log.

Got any phrases or words to drop?

Before you suggest "All that wander are not lost", try it in a conversation. "Great view, isn't it? Have you noticed all that wander are not lost and did you see that bobcat down by the lake?"

You walked away on an FTF? Muggles or not I think I would have jabbed them with a stick. :D

This came up before somewhere. Someone (can't rememeber who) called it the Geodance: Look at GPSr, look at sky, look at GPSr, scratch head, walk around, look at GPSr, look at sky.

We have yet to find any other geocachers on the trail. Of course, they probably recognize me from the forums and hide.

I think the term lesbian is generally applied to female homosexuals.

I seriously doubt that anyone who understands that sign would assume that Jeremy, or any of the rest of us male cachers are lesbian.

(Looking for a lesbian...maybe.)

Secret societies are fun, though, and I think the best secret sign would be that very sign (extended index finger below the chin).

I always have a hard time remembering which hand to use, though. :o:lol:

If you had read the recently updated guidelines, you would know that the proper procedure has been "adequately" set forth therein:

"When approached by an individual you presume to be a geocacher, make 'the sign.' The other party should respond by raising one eyebrow and verbalizing the words 'tough nuts.'"

Secret signal #1, I wear my hat almost all the time when caching, golfing, yard work, boys night out. I've been approached more than once by a fellow cacher and asked if I geocache. In fact, I have met more cachers in a non-caching environment than I have while hunting a cache because of the hat.

Secret signal #2, the yellow etrex I carry is a dead give away. I've been approached by cachers and non-cachers while on the trail asked if I were a geocacher because of the etrex, this in a few rare times when caching and not wearing my hat. One time was in a small city park by a BLM wildlife specialist (my Dad knew her from work) it led to a rather interesting conversation about cache placement, eagle nests, and a thread in these forums she had started about her concerns.

Secret signal #3, if I suspect the other person on the trail is a cacher I've been known to ask 'Did you find it?' or 'Which one are you looking for?'. This approach has drawn some strange looks from non-cachers and great conversations with cachers.

Secret signal #4, the printout.

I tend to stay away from the hand signals, for fear of inadvertently insulting the other person by not holding my hand just right. (Think of a former president holding two fingers up in a 'peace' signal but having his hand backward turning the simple sign into an insult as he got off a plane.)
