windlove
Hello, I'm a photographer for the Times newspaper in London and discovered geocaching a couple of weeks ago. I am looking for a good multi cache to try with a writer that we can write up for a feature in the T2 section of the Times newspaper. I am slowly browsing through the hundereds on this site but would appreciate some help in choosing 2 or 3 to try for this article. Unfortunately due to deadline demands we have to do this tomorrow (Tues 10th Dec). We are in London but would ideally like a rural cache within about 2 hours drive from London. Somthing that would make an interesting read, and nice pictures too, and maybe a couple of others to try in the area if we fail the first one! I tried one in Highgate Cemetry with my girlfriend, found all the clues but didn't have enough light to find the final cache, but at least I know the GPS unit is working OK. If anyone has suggestions for an interesting cache to try and could post tonight, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Paul Quote Link to comment
The Hornet
There's a fair few around Herts/Bucks. If you want something close to the M25/M40 how about GCGWG7 M25? what...M 25? by Pharisee. A shortish multi cache with a nice twist, nearby is GCDF3D Twitchers (I have to admit is one of mine) which is a nice walk and a pretty location. Once you are in this area there are loads more to choose from. I wish I could help you but unfortunately I'm otherwise engaged tomorrow. Hope this helps. Peter Quote Link to comment
Subarite
Hi Paul, There is a cache Tomb Raider - Mission I that leaves a lasting impression on all that attempt and finally find it. I have to say I am not sure it is suitable for the article you are considering but it is definitely a cache to remember. Check out the logs and see what you think. Andy. Quote Link to comment
minstrelcat
If you fancy a challenge I can thoroughly recommend 'The Deck of Fate and Fortune - Part two' (GCGKX4) - but it will probably take you all day to complete! Also, the Isle of Sheppey has some great and unusual rural caches. Lisa Quote Link to comment
Learned Gerbil
It might not be a multi - but Old Father Thames gives a great sense of being involved in some sort of subtifuge as you feel under a bench for a magnetised container in full view of the many passers by. Quote Link to comment
Orti_
Quantum Leap Part 1 / Part 2 or "Up and Down Again", 3 very well planned and placed caches. "Up and Down Again" is maybe the more photogenic one but the Quantum leaps are really a challenge . You should read the logs for these caches. Quote Link to comment
MarcB
I'm not from the area but let us know when the article is going to be published- I often read the T2 section MarcB Quote Link to comment
hants_bluepants
I think we would all like to know when the article will appear. Quote Link to comment
windlove
Thanks everyone for the timely replies, have chosen 4 to try, will let you know how we get on, and I'll post here when I know the exact date the article will appear. Thanks again, Paul Quote Link to comment
windlove
Had a great day trying two caches today. It was very cold and foggy, but we found two out of two and got some good pictures. I'm sure this will make a great feature and will let you know when its published. Paul Quote Link to comment
windlove
The article will be the cover story for the T2 section of the Times this Monday (15th Dec). Thanks to everyone for your help, we had a lot of fun, and I'm hooked and allready planning my next few caches. I've put a couple of pictures from the article on the cache pages as they don't often put them on the web site. Means you'll all have to go and buy the paper anyway. One's of Damian (writer) from Dan Wilson's 'Heritage & Horror' which we ended up doing in the dark which was quite appropriate. The others of what we left in Pharisee's 'M25... what M25?'. M25 picture Damian at Heritage & Horror Thanks again, Paul Edited December 13, 2003 by windlove Quote Link to comment
Pharisee
I love the graveyard photograph... it's a cracker Quote Link to comment
Subarite
I agree with Pharisee - the photo is outstanding, just a little above the normal cache photo . Andy. Quote Link to comment
The Wombles
Fantastic photo, and glad to hear that Paul enjoyed caching enough to do more. We'll look forward to the calendar If the article goes well then we should get some more cachers joining us including people who get GPSrs for Xmas. Quote Link to comment
Seifer
Well done paul for actually finding one of Dan's hopefully we will have loads of new people join us, and the forums we be more lively and friendly. Do you think this will ever become a mainstream sport?! Quote Link to comment
MarcB
Cover story eh? That's pretty darn good! MarcB Quote Link to comment
The Merman
Superb photography (But then I would expect nothing less from a Times snapper!) I get the Times delivered to my office so guess who will be pinching the T2 as soon as it arrives on my desk Quote Link to comment
The Hornet
Do you think this will ever become a mainstream sport?! I sincerely hope not !!!!! If it does go mainstream where will I go then to find assorted cranks, geeks, buffers, maniacs, GOG's etc.?? Quote Link to comment
MCL
Lovely touch, the banknote. You can just see the headlines can't you...SADDAM HUSSEIN FOUND IN HOLE IN GROUND.... ..Pretty far fetched huh, even for The Times... Quote Link to comment
The Hornet
Just read the two page spread in the T2 section of today's Times. All I can say is well done Windlove for capturing the essence of geocaching without resorting to the cheap jibes we've all seen before. A well written article. I think you've done a great service to our "sport" and for that I for one thank you. I hope the lazier geocachers amongst us don't use the clues you printed to help them find the caches mentioned Nice quotes from Pharisee and Dan as well. The only shame is that Saddam went and got himself captured and pushed it off the front page of the section. Mind you when I first say it I thought "my God, old Lost in Space has got his mugshot in the Times" Nice one Damien. Quote Link to comment
Lost in Space
.......... Mind you when I first say it I thought "my God, old Lost in Space has got his mugshot in the Times" .....................and they took my loose change and beer money, to boot!! Mind you, I did get a free shave and haircut - of course, Dad, you will have forgotten what a haircut is about...... Quote Link to comment
The Merman
I agree with Hornet totally on this one. The article was not poking fun at the hobby and I think that one of the reasons was that they went out and did it instead of stage managing a cache for the article. We can all try to explain our reasons why we cache but they now know because they got cold and tired and went home with a sense of smug satisfaction after the day out. I suppose that Pharisee will be turning up for our Grockles grand day out on Saturday wearing sunglasses and carrying a set of signed 6x4's now that he is a celeb Quote Link to comment
Chris n Maria
Arrrgh - is someone having a Giraffe at my expense! I've just gone out and bought the Times and cant see an article at all. Where should I be looking??? Chris Quote Link to comment
Pharisee
It's in the 'Full size' version of the Times but not in the 'small' version. I bought the little one this morning and figured the Saddam thing had 'bumped it. Then Hornet phoned..... gotta buy another one at lunchtime Quote Link to comment
The Hornet
For those unable to find it in the newspaper (I think some hasty re-organisation went on last night) I've scanned the pages for viewing here. Just click on each image in turm to see an enlarged view. If there's a problem with copyright I'll have to remove them but I hope it will be OK. Quote Link to comment
Chris n Maria
Thanks Peter, What a great article ~ very impressed with it. Chris Quote Link to comment
Pharisee
Thanks for that, Peter. I'll still have to go and buy a paper at lunchtime though.(if there are any left ) That's one very nice article... I think the guy has done us proud. I also think he'll be out caching again before too long Quote Link to comment
windlove
Peter, Thanks for scanning that in. I am in Humberside today where this edition did not have the article in. Thought it might get bumped after hearing about Saddam. Glad everyone seems to be happy with it. Thanks again everyone. Now, I'm sure theres some travel bugs up here somewhere.... +stu_and_sarah
So Paul, Do you think you will carry on caching now the article is complete? Sarah -- Quote Link to comment
washboy
That's one really good article and a fun read too. It's the first article I've seen that I feel represents our activity accurately and fairly. I'd be happy to show that piece to anyone who enquired of me, "What's that geowhatsit stuff about, then?". It explains it far better than I could. Many, many thanks, Paul (Windlove). Responsible, informative journalism and entertaining too! Quote Link to comment
hants_bluepants
Excellent article - shame about the spoilers! Are there any geocheats out there? Quote Link to comment
windlove
Stu and Sarah - I've done another one today, will take a TB from Hull back to London. I will continue to geocache, dragging my girlfriend, friends, sister and anyone else along too. It's one of those great moments as a photographer that reminds you what a great job it is, being paid to do somthing so fun you'd be doing it anyway Thinking about all you office bound folks, sorry. Anyway, it was Damian's writing skill that made it such an interesting article, so if you have any ideas for future, I'm sure he'd love to know. Quote Link to comment
OzGuff
Really enjoyed the article! Definitely captured the essence of the activity, and the graveyard photo is awesome!! Can't wait to do some UK caches when I visit in Feb and March. Thanks to Paul for giving caching some very positive spin. OzGuff Quote Link to comment

quimbly
It wasn't in the Times here in Staffordshire (and I did get the broadsheet version), so thanks for the scan. Quote Link to comment
Rocky Balboa
Nice 1, loved the article thanks Paul & Damien, like many have already said, it explains caching really well and managed to not make it sound to freaky either cheers guys. Quote Link to comment
paul.blitz
Well, I can only agree with what everyone else has said: what a pleasant and well-balanced article it was. So much better than the many "gee wiz" type of thing we've seen elsewhere. Heck, it almost made us sound "normal"!!!! And how amazingly ironic that Paul chose to put Iraqi banknotes into the cache! He couldn't have chosen anything better if had tried! Paul: I hope you can come down to Hampshire at the end of Jan, for our late Xmas social! Mind you, not sure if the pub will take that strange money you seem to carry around :-) Paul Blitz Quote Link to comment
Subarite
I enjoyed the article as it captured the essence of caching from the despair - where is the …… thing to the satisfaction of finding it . Hopefully the article will encourage a new wave of cachers in the south. Thanks to Paul and Damian. Andy. Quote Link to comment
Nzbuu
I seem to have a hybrid copy of T2. The cover is Saddam Hussein and pages 4 & 5 is the Geocaching article. Not a mention of Saddam anywhere else in T2. Anyway, excellent article. Well done. Quote Link to comment
The Cuthberts
Thanks for the excellent article and thanks for the scan Peter. Quote Link to comment
TheCookieCrew
Windlove, many thanks for the unbiased article, I guess as I live fairly local to these two caches I should head out and do them..... Like you say maybe on boxing day !!! Cheers, Mike Quote Link to comment
Omally
Fantastic article! Really well written, and I especially like the summary of the last line... Quote Link to comment
minstrelcat
Have to agree with everyone - great article. The general forum always has threads moaning about dreadful write ups in the US press - nice to see it can be done properly here. One thing, what it is about journalists always needing to publish people's ages? Lisa Quote Link to comment
