I ordered my 60CS on or about November 26th from GPS Central here in Canada. I have heard nothing but good things about them and I needed a new unit anyway... my GPS III+ has been acting funny.

I really want one, but I will wait until all of you post your comments after actually getting to use one. I really don't need to replace my etrex legend but I sure like the look and features of these new units.

I have not planned on ordering one (yet :( ), but after they are out there for a while, I may consider one.

My Vista is less than a year old and works really well, so I would need more of an incentive to upgrade.

On the other hand, if I were to see and try one for a short time, I could probably be convinced to pry open the wallet :D .

Does 30 hours of battery life AND a color display constitute enough incentive for you to upgrade? It does for me! I only get 12 hours of operation from my Vista. 30 hours would be great!

I will be ordering one as soon as I see that they are in-stock at the various on-line stores. I don't see any reason to "preorder" one. That would just limit my options once there are available.

I kind of wonder about that 30 hour claim. No doubt it will get that kind of battery life with some fancy battery saving mode where it turns off the screen and only takes a reading every 30 minutes or something. I just can't see it getting that kind of battery life on 2 AA batteries. (Or was that 2 car batteries?)

My GPS V gets about 15 hours using NIMH with the light off. How can something that has to light the screen all the time get so much better????

Dunno. It is a claim. If I base it on the same curve the E-Trex line gives, that still means over 20 hours of operation.

This is why I am waiting to hear the first "field" reports. I hope someone like me puts a meter on it and gets the numbers for current drain in the various modes. However, even if it IS only 20 hours.... it will outclass my Vista by 8 hours, and that plus the color screen and greater memory IS enough for me.

JMNSHO - YMMV.

I bet that 30 hours of battery life isn't with the backlight on......

I wear my headlamp in the truck as I drive and look at my GPS with it (Red LED) to conserve battery power (and my gps uses 4 batteries!) while night caching, and never use my backlight anymore. Batteries last A LOT longer now.

I admit, hard core Lowrance user that I am, this new Garmin has my interest. It is QUITE cool........

Rather pricey though. I'll wait til the cost comes down and field reports come in first before plunking down any cache (hehe) on one.

From my understanding, this unit has no backlight. It is always lit because it ahs a color TFT screen, like a Pocket PC.

As my information, it does have backlight, but the 30 hours battery life is under the conditions of battery saving mode and without turning on the backlight!

I am going to wait a bit...I am sure they will upgrade the firmware and add more features just as soon as it comes out, and once it has been in circulation a while the price is sure to come down...

Just too much $$$$ for me, although, I guess I COULD put my Platinum up for sale...hmmmmm.....

Anyone looking to buy a 76S in very nice condition complete with original box, manual, GPS Store neoprene case w/ window, and RAM holder?

If so, then I can add my name to this list of potential 60CS owners. Serious, anybody interested?????

Doesn't look like the 60CS comes with City Select (like the "Deluxe" V models)? How long before teh 60Cx comes with a "Deluxe" kit that includes the City Select Software, this is a pretty expensive unit that 'should' come with CS standard as what good is autorouting if you only have a standard basemap?

Put it up for sale on the Garage Sale forum. You may have to wait a couple of days, but they will come. I had four e's w/i a couple of days for my 76S - the guy who bought it wrote to me w/i 15m or so.

As for the not-included maps... yeah, what's with that?

Maybe they figure we'll all be so taken with the new machine we'll forgive them for the oversight, and buy them separately? Ka-ching.

The 60CS uses a transreflective tft screen, this reflects light off the back of the screen, producing a bright display without using large amounts of batterie power. This is were Garmin has made one of the savings to extend the life of the batteries in the unit. Dave

Battery saving mode shuts down some of the internal workings and makes the GPS less accurate. Even covering the antenna area slightly with your hand in that mode will make you lose your lock. I think companies should advertise their products as such:

Battery Saving Mode : *hours

Battery Saving Mode with Backlight: *hours

Normal Mode: *hours

Normal Mode with Backlight: *hours

That might clear up any questions to users wanting info on their GPS units.

My 2 dollars worth.

Well, I was just about to put my GPSV up for sale along with City Select and Metroguide in anticpation of getting the Gamrin 60c but I see the release date has been pushed back to 'early March" now.

Bummer. Looks like I better hold on to my V for a few more months.

If anyone remembers watching the iQue "expected availability", it may be some time before we see these. :D

Maybe Garmin runs on hospital time. When they say 15 minutes, it can easily run 6 or more hours!!!!

Does Garmin have any ties to M$? Remember Windows 2000 was released in 2001.

Does anyone know if the 60 series offers tide predictions like the 76s? Although I love the color display and battery life for the 60c/s, this could be a deal buster for me. There are currently no manuals available for the 60 c/s that I can find.

This, I do not know. That is why I sent a formal request for this info to my Garmin Rep. I should have an answer in a day or two and will post it here for you.

I had a few other specific questions, and will post those answers here also.

I am not totally sure, but this line in the GPSMAP 60CS Specification page suggests tidal/moon information will be included:

  • Tables: Built-in celestial tables for best times to fish and hunt; sun and moon rise, set, and location

Looks to me like Garmin is trying to go "one up" on the Magellan MeriPlat. It reads nice on the Garmin website, but the proof is in the pudding. The Geocaching features are appealing, if they indeed work as advertised. I will wait for Magellan to counter Garmin before I upgrade my MeriPlat. First generation units usually suck and are disappointments full of bugs and design flaws. What about the high price tag? Ouch! The memory is limited to 56Mb? Whose idea was that? Too funny! I've always wanted to play games on my GPS.....NOT! I'll bet the battery life is not half of what Gramin is claiming. Magellan rules! Flame on!

Magellan rules? Hmmmmm, sounds to me like you have to try a Garmin. :D I had the Meridian Gold for 6 months and could not wait to get rid of it. I just hated it, but to each his or her own, right?

Personally I don't think there will be all that many problems with this unit. Garmin has been making GPS Units for many years now and seems to have it down right. I wonder if anyone here has purchased a Vista,V, Geko or what have you when they first came out. Were there any design problems?

The price is good right now while their taking preorders. I found one at $415 and another site that I actualy have done business with at $429. I don't know if their will be any better deal until something newer comes out unless they offer rebates farther down the line. It definitely has me thinking now

I am new to this, so I do not pretend to know what the heck I am talking about, but...

It appears that the 60c and 60cs do not have expandable memory slots like the Magellan's do. I don't understand that. To be honest, we were looking at strickly buying Garmin. But the expandable memory seems like it could really come in handy down the road. That was the biggest selling point of the Magellan to me. I have waited to purchase though because I was hoping the 60c and 60cs would have this option. From what I read, they don't. I could be wrong though. Anyone know if I am?

Ok well I asked, and exactlty as promised, here is the official answer on this,

At this time the GPS 60 CS does not offer the tide data field.

I have passed along your request for this feature to be added to the unit.

I have deleted the contacts name and email due to confidentiality regulations, but this reply is directly from a Senior Product Specialist at Garmin. So this is confirmed and official.

How is that for a good answer! Garmin is pretty good when you ask them a question, yet another reason to deal with them. I hope this helps in deciding on which unit is suitable for you. If you need more help or have other question just ask and I will see if I can get an answer for you.

Any history of which dealer's will receive the 1st units? TVNav, GPS City, The GPS Store ????

Or maybe more importantly, who WON'T be one of the 1st dealers to receive the new 60 series GPS

Any chance you can get a copy of the owners manual for the 60cs?

They are probably not even back from the printing department yet, but I will see what I can do for you. Maybe I can get one in PDF format, if so I will email it to you.

But, now it is Christmas time, so don't hold your breath waiting. :D

PDF format would be perfect! Thanks for looking into this for me!
