+Patuxent Pirates
I am trying to find a waterproof box for a cache I am putting together. I saw a tacklebox type (but without trays, etc.) that would be good at a cache recently, but I didn't check to see who made it. It needs to also have a lock hole in it as well. I have looked high and low and can only find tackleboxes (which have compartments, trays, and just generally will not work) or very expensive Pelican type boxes which would be awsome if it were not for the price. Can anyone point me in the direction of a simple (read no shelves or compartments) box which would be waterproof, tacklebox size, lockable, and not cost a fortune? Tall order I know, but tupperware and ammo cans are out so I am stuck. Thanks Edited December 3, 2003 by SoMDCacherz Quote Link to comment
+ChrisCindy
You could look at a dive shop but I bet it would cost a lot of money for a box from there. Quote Link to comment
+Doc-Dean
You could check out the plastic tool boxes at your local Home Depot or Lowe's Store. Quote Link to comment
+Touchstone
I recently bought a Pelican box at a local kayaking shop. They have various sizes, but they are kind of spendy compared to the trusty old ammo can. Quote Link to comment
GeoVet
Why not just buy the cheap one that meets your other criteria and take the trays & shelves out? Quote Link to comment
+hikemeister
You can find Pelican - type boxes in marine supply shops, and probably can get a decent sized one (e.g., 3 X 3 X 6 inches) for under $15. Quote Link to comment
bug and snake
There are plenty of inexpensive tool boxes out there with just a removable tray in them. I am sure you can find a use for the tray in the shed or garage. One of the best caches I ever found was in just such a box. Go for it..... Quote Link to comment
+Stunod
Most of those cheap tool boxes are not waterproof. Make sure you bag the contents to protect them. Quote Link to comment

+Patuxent Pirates
I just assumed that tool boxes would not be waterproof and would not be suitable for caches. Also, if I could find one with removable shelves I would do that but most seem to have them integrated into the box and would leave holes on the side, but hey, guess I could not be lazy and just plug those huh? bug and snake
Good point Stunod. The one I referenced was waterproof as it happens but good point..... You need to look out for one of the ones (they are available) with an 'O' ring type seal. But, as you say, Zip Locks work great inside a reasonably good container. Quote Link to comment
+Criminal
I've used one of these with a small tupperware inside: Quote Link to comment
+Patuxent Pirates
Wow Team Og Rof A Klaw, those things are huge. I'll have to do a search for other sizes. Quote Link to comment

+Patuxent Pirates
Criminal..... where do you buy that at. That looks like a winner!! I think that would do a great job as long as its not huge. Hard to tell what size that is. Quote Link to comment
+Team Og Rof A Klaw
SoMDCacherz, here's a place to start (courtesy Crim.) Crim's box is a compact safe. (Unfortunately, he neglected to mention that it's out of stock. ) Edited December 3, 2003 by Team Og Rof A Klaw Quote Link to comment

Hard to tell what size that is. Here's the page, but it looks like they're out of stock. I drilled two holes in the back and screwed it into a wood sign post right near the parking area of a cache. You walked out into the park and found the first stage of the cache which sent you back to the parking area. A small sticker on the outside read: United States Geocache Site Logging Station Do Not Disturb. If you were able to figure out that the box on the pole was the cache, you still had to deal with the four number combo-lock. The only clue provided was "Slots Jackpot" Can you figure it out? bug and snake
It's not too hard to add a hasp type lock to an ammo box..... Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I can think of several ways to add a lock to an ammo box. Quote Link to comment

+sodajerk
9key in Texas got an ammo can lock on e-bay. I searched today and found none, but I have seen them in the past. Look at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=96532 Sanity. I have not found one of the keys, but it is on my watch list. Jim Quote Link to comment
+Patuxent Pirates
Umm, I eliminated ammo cans and tupperware because it will be a locked cache. I didn't see how I could easily achieve that with either of those solutions. I saw a tacklebox type container that would work which was lockable and water tight. Anyway, I need to go look at Dick's Sporting Goods on a tip from the cache owner where I saw this container. I wish they had more of those safes............................................. Oh well, getting the cache together is fun for me so...... Quote Link to comment
+nincehelser
You might look around here: http://www.planomolding.com Lots of tackleboxes...most have compartments, but I bet a few dont, or are removable. Whatever happened to lunchboxes? It seems that when I was a kid they had some very really rugged lunchboxes...the kind a construction worker might use...but I can't say I've seen that kind in a long time. bergie_69
Here's a lock kit for ammo cans. It's $6.95 with free shipping. http://www.themagtool.com/ammocanlock.html Quote Link to comment

+quills
Try looking at Maracs Merciless Masterlock Cache and Maracs Lighthouse Cache, They are both located in Pa and were done with masterlocks on ammo boxes. Very tricky and I never would have believed you could lock them that way. Hope this helps. Quote Link to comment
+Wulfster
There are a lot of caches in PA. +quills
Thanks wulfster I tried getting the links to work for almost an hour and finally said just post the names. Quote Link to comment
+Patuxent Pirates
Hmm, that ammo can lock has potential as a solution. I wish Plano or someone made plain waterproof boxes with a simple latch & lock hole. I looked again last night on the web and around town with no luck. The tackle boxes at WAL-MART are either too complex or would not hold up. We have no sporting goods store, I'll have to run by the Marine store on Friday. Quote Link to comment
