What Was Your Most Disgusting Cito?

:D I'm new but this has to be one of the most disgusting things to find. At the parking place to go to a local cache I found 3/4 of a rotten deer carcass some local muggles left behind!! I called the Fish and Game Department to get Permission to remove the body as I have a hunting License and didn't want to be accused of killing this one not notching my tag and going for another. Permission was granted by phone and the area is now clean.

Anyone have anything worse?

Wow, that sure is going above and beyond...99.9% of people would not have volunteered to remove THAT...

Great job and a great example of CITO.

Well, I and some other local cachers are trying to get permission to hold a CITO event in a local park. So far, the most disgusting thing I've encountered while caching was a "balloon" used for protection. Suffice it to say, if we get the go-ahead to hold the event, I'm going to make some of those broomsticks with spikes on the end so you don't have to touch the trash directly. :P

Most disgusting? That's easy. A cache was placed near a reststop here. I went to find it and while searching ran into a fellow cacher who was quite irritated. He said he couldn't find the cache and that he had found a large "stash" of porn. He pointed out where it was. So I went to look for the cache and as I passed by I saw what this "stash" was. It consisted of several "hardcore" magazines taken apart and the pages draped and arranged all over a big stump. Along with that were about a dozen dresses and pieces of lingerie. There were used condoms and tissues all around this area. :D My first inclination was to leave, but I just couldn't leave all that there for some kid to find by accident.

So I went to my car and got a couple garbage bags and a collapsible emergency shovel and cleaned the whole revolting, perverted mess up. My kids were with me and it was quite a job to clean all that up while keeping them far enough away. Being as curious as they are, they just wanted to see what I was doing.

The bright side of it was that while I was cleaning the mess up my 9 year old son found the cache and was FTF. The cache owner archived it the next day.

Unfortunately along with the starter of this topic...

I am in the planning stages of a CITO event in January, and know there is a beheaded deer just waiting to be removed. I am going to try and get the local animal control people to get it out.

Heck, I'd even be happy to log them as being at the event!!

This was definitely your Hunter Ethics coming into play here.

Nice job, ironman114.

As avid Jeepers, we have 4-wheeled In and Trashed Out. It is amazing what people throw out in the woods and even in the lake where our local drinking water comes from. At one point (after all the usual treadless tires, Keystone's cans, paint cans, mattresses, etc), we winched out an entire kitchen cabinet set :D - complete with a microwave oven.

While not disgusting in the sense of smelly or bloody - it really was mentally disgusting.

EDIT: attempt to incorporate the post immediately after this one :D

I keep fiding used condoms. Maybe that doesn't count because I sure as heck don't CITO those. But the keystone cans that led up to the need for them are fair game.

I wish to state for the record that Keystone's can has never been a contributing factor to the need for a condom, nor can it be considered "fair game."

A bit off topic but I thought I would tell the story anyway.

A few years back while I was living in Wisconsin our Audubon chapter partnered with the local Boy Scout council to clean up a park. The scouts created pledge cards and asked people to donate for every 50 pounds of trash removed. We targeted to remove one ton of trash. The pledge cards had a space where people could mark the maximum amount they were willing to contribute.

We had a huge turnout for the event and had to send volunteers to Wal-Mart, Menards, and Fleet Farm for more trash bags.

8 hours and nearly 23,000 pounds later, we called it a successful day. What was the worst? Just the thought that we could remove that much stuff from one park.

Then governor Tommy Thompson was so impressed he sent every scout who volunteered a personal commendation.

Now I almost always carry trash bags with me to CITO. I figure every little but will help.

It doesn't compare, but I did my personal best today, manhandling a shopping cart out of a streambed and up the trail to a roadway.

Most disgusting? A local cache had to be archived for awhile because they found a body floating in a lagoon nearby. The pros were called in to deal with that one.

I hope you can get them to remove it. If you can't and I make it to the CITO; Well..... I think I'll let YOU deal with that severed deer head!!!! Blech!!! :D

Seriously now.... I'm glad you are working on that. It sounds like a pretty trashy park! Thanks for working on cleaning it up some! :D

Sounds like my Venison Sausage will not go over well at this event. :D

Deer carcass nor any other dead wild animal in woods are not CITO - things! Carcasses are essential food supplies for many animals including birds, mammals and even insects. So do not remove dead animals from forests, as Mother Nature will take care of them, many times in suprisingly short time.

I did return these to the woods for the bugs and critters. I just took them to a place more than just 1/4 mile from town and deeper off the road, where passersby wouldn't see or smell them.

You misunderstand....the carcass is short of it's head. Not the other way around. Some "hunter" removed it's head with what appears to be a chainsaw. Well looking at the cut anyway.

Not many things cut quite like a chainsaw!!

Aww...come on now...you can help manhandle that fat, bloated carcass with the rest of us can't you??

How do you know it was a hunter and not another disgruntled deer? I hear they get pretty mean in the rutting season. Which brings up the next question: Can you operate a chainsaw without an opposable thumb?

The closest I've come to having to clean up anything like that (aside from human carcasses when I was a paramedic) was a truckload of beef by-products that overturned on the highway near here during a spell of 100+ degree weather.

Now you're all scaring me! OMG!!

I'm thinking peaceful trecks through the wooded country side, looking for hidden treasure, my camera with me to capture moments of beauty as the sun begins to set. My husband and I chatting and looking for a cache, while our dog wonders around. Maybe picking up beer cans and trash that uncaring campers have left behind.

You're talking about bloated, beheaded, creatures!!! GROSS!

The cache was a micro type...in a sandwhich sized zip bag. Anyhow, the waste was just inches away. I carefully removed the cache to a slightly different spot and notified the cache owner.

i had an idea for a hiding spot the other day and drove by the area to check it out. its part of a quarry with lots of old concrete structures and hills. turns out it is posted. while driving by, i saw 2 deer carcasses on the edge of the road, in plain view. one was even something of a traffic hazard. that one had its head cleanly removed, the other had only the top of it skull-and i assume its antlers-removed. it was also gutted. so some hunters apparently bagged a couple of bucks and didn't have the need or energy to finish dressing them and decided it would be easier to ditch them on the side of a moderatley travelled local road. what a waste......

i know there's many responsible hunters out there, but unfortunately, its guys like the carcass dumpers who leave the most memorable impressions.

Was out scouting for a cache location when I came upon a trail that I followed for about 40 feet from the dirt road at a local lake! I came upon used "balloons" on the ground and "balloons" that were filled with what looked like urine tied to the tree branches! There was also several piles of human doot and used toilet paper along with various adult magazines and a mattress. ;) I am just lucky that I didn't ran into the troll that lived there! I talked to the lake patrol and they had said that there is alot of activity in this park and as they run them out from one section, they just go to another! There was just no way that I could clean that area up without wearing a full hazmat suit! It is remarkable what people will leave for others to find!

Several years ago, my brother and I found something similar at a local lake, but it was one of those "pop-up" campers that had been abandoned. We reported it several times to the rangers, but no one ever did anything about it. It was in an area that is popular for families and kids. After about 4 months and countless complaints to the rangers, with no results, we took matters into our own hands. A gallon of gasoline and 3 hours later, it was a pile of ashes. Two days after that, the park department had it cleaned up, even taking away the "charred" ground underneath it. You couldn't even tell it had ever been there. I'm not advocating what we did, as we were young and stupid, but it at least got rid of the problem.

Made a pretty fire, too!

If you spend time outdoors this is the risk you take, geocaching or not. I grew up in the Pacific north west, walking the beach you sometimes found a dead sea lion or other creature, gross but it didn't keep us off the beach. In my desert Rat incarnation I've run across dead horses and cows, sad but it happens, I'm still in the hills whenever I can.

I wouldn't let the risk of finding something unpleasent keep me at the mall, hey you might see something you don't like there too.

Way off topic but, I think, pretty funny.

My favorite "ballon" experience was in England. My host and I were enjoying a cold Strongbow on a quay by the Thames. We spotted a "ballon" floating in the water. I commented to my host that we had the same species in the US. Without so much as a blink he replied; "Amazing how far they migrate isn't it?"

You just gotta love the Brits.

I am looking for CITO labels for film canisters. I have seen various ones out caching. But I would like to make my own labels to drop in caches. If anyone has information or a template they can email me I would much appreciiate it. I cito alot so other cachers can enjoy just caching and not having to worry about picking up trash.I Have came across nothing like a deer carcas. But I have came across the used condoms and the abundance of liquor bottles and people that dump their garbage out in the middle of no where.I have even seen chairs and couches. But to see animal bodies ,that takes the icing on the cake.If anyone has a template or even some labels they can send me I would much appreciate it.

I had placed a cache in an area right off a popular trail. It was a nice area under old cedar trees that appeared to be frequented by micro-aliens in the warmer months.

2 days later I started getting logs about inappropriate items near the cache. So, armed with trash bags and gloves I headed out. I knew there were some trash lying around. I had promised myself I would return and clean it up another day. But what I discovered was hardcore porn magazines diassembled and laying out along some logs, Syringes, soiled clothing, Broken Beer bottles, used condoms and Trash everywhere. Must have been quite a party.

I seriously considered archiving the cache and just leaving the mess but I sucked it up and cleaned up the area. It took two trips.

When I was done it was all worth it. I couldn't beleive how nice everything looked.

Still have 20 showers left until I'll feel clean though. ;)

Well today I just removed another deer carcass from the same cache as before. This one was just bones and rib cage, but it was really rotten.I had to use a shovel to move it cause it smelled so bad! I'm glad that all hunting seasons are over here now and this may be the last one to remove for this winter.:D:D

Just a cautionary note on CITO...Be aware of what your "trash find" could be. In my area of Washington State, areas popular for geocaching are also popular for illegal methamphetamine production and lab dump sites. See this website...

Dump Sites

If you should find listed items together in one site, call your local law enforcement agency. Don't attempt cleanup yourself, these sites are very hazardous!

Watch out for the porn too. Meth users lose all the basic human survival drives. About all they have left is the need for more meth, and more sex. Lots of porn is a common find in meth/lab arrests...

Hope I didn't scare anyone too badly! Just be aware and enjoy...

Of course you realize that all those cute animals in the woods will eventually die, and become a stinky, smelly carcass until something comes and eats it up, or someone cleans it up, hunters or no hunters. That's just part of nature! :D

before I got started cacheing, I grew up on a huge farm in illinois, and walking through the woods one day I found a suitcase and in it were the following

a) 1 2xl TALL cabelas hunting coat

 1 pair of waist waders

c) 1 FULL box of 15 protection "balloons" (brand Troj*n Mag.)

I was 15 at the time and said hell nice coat and waders what the hell are these for *points at the box*

I had that coat for 4 years until I got stolen out of my truck *dadgum rednecks* :) J/k

I don't really know if this counts as a CITO but it was a nice find almost like a cache worth something

You mean like what happend to HeyRob4449 at hisLakota Pipe Dream cache?

His September 22, 2003 logs say:

Be careful what you Cache In – Trash Out

As the owner of the Lakota Pipe Dream cache I began getting comments posted to the cache page starting back on August 30th. with one from Uplink stating... There was some possible homeless guy stuff quite close to the cache... I was surprised since there was nothing like that when I visited the previous weekend. A couple of weeks passed before I finally stopped by on Friday the 12th. to check it out.

My initial look revealed an old paper sack, a pickle jar half inside a nylon bag with what looked like sugar inside, and some rubber gloves. Having nothing to put the trash in I didn't disturb the debris, checked to see that the cache was still in place and decided to come back the next day with a garbage bag and some gloves of my own. The weekend was busy and I didn't get a chance to go back, and on Saturday the 13th. the cache was visited first by Nomad Raven and then by RomulusNR, both commented on the stuff at the cache site, and on Sunday evening the 14th. RomulusNR posted a note saying that he had taken the Federal Way police to the site to investigate the stuff. He felt it might have been connected with... production or dissemination of a nefarious substance. He went on to add that The officers joining me at the spot do not believe that this is the case... My own initial look hadn't raised any such suspicions either, so I made a point of getting back there on Monday afternoon to clean up the mess.

I stopped on my way home from work on Monday and as I walked in past the chain link gate I noticed a pair of latex rubber gloves in a bush about 20 feet from the gate. I assume that they were discarded by one of the police officers who met RomulusNR there the day before. As I gathered the stuff up and placed it in a garbage bag (I was wearing rubber gloves) I also found a beer bottle that I hadn't noticed on my initial look, it was full of liquid and I assumed that it was a full bottle of beer left by the same person who left the jar of sugar. There was also a large plastic funnel, which I hadn't noticed the first time either. Perhaps both were in or covered by the bag or I just wasn't being too observant. I picked it all up and also collected the gloves near the gate before removing my own, and placed the bag on the back seat floor of my car.

When I got home I removed the bag from the car only to discover that something was eating a hole into my carpet! I quickly placed the bag on top of my garbage can and grabbed a hose to put water on the carpet to stop the burning. I then went into the house and called the Federal Way Police to see if I could find out which officer had investigated this stuff the day before. After explaining what had happened, the woman I was talking to told me to call 9-1-1 and ask for the fire department. I explained that I lived in Pierce County and that I would get the Tacoma fire department and that the stuff had come from King County. I was told to call them any way, that the PD didn't get involved in chemical disposal issues.

I then called 9-1-1 and explained the situation and that was when the real fun began! First units of both the Browns Point FD as well as the Dash Point FD (I live between the two) responded. The Chief asked me what happened and I explained the story of how I came to have this nasty stuff! They kept a safe distance from me and wouldn't even consider getting near the garbage can. At this point I realized that this was about to get real complicated. I was quarantined on my driveway with one brave firefighter who took my vital signs in case I became ill later; the two of us were then stuck there for over an hour until the Tacoma Fire Department's Hazardous Material Response Unit, arrived to check the stuff out. This unit is a very cool RV sized truck that had to be worth a million bucks. It's equipped with a full satellite internet connection as well as GPS tracking. I wish I had gotten a tour, but I was still quarantined half way down my driveway while the guys with the moon suits took samples of the corrosive liquid and analyzed it.

I had made the 9-1-1 call about 5:30PM and the last of the excitement wasn't over with until about 9:30PM. The liquid turned out to be Muratic Acid [a.k.a. hydrochloric acid] and the white powder was not identified other than the guys from the Department of Ecology said it's not meth [probably lye]... I took the fact that the Federal Way police hadn't seen anything suspicious there to mean that it was safe to throw it away. The real disturbing part was that on the same day jake490 posted his find and added... I came here last week to look for this cache and the ravine cache and the police were here cleaning up a drug lab dump right next to this cache, needless to say they wouldn't let me look for the cache at that time... I guess the moral of the story is that if you find anything like the stuff described here, DON'T MESS WITH IT!
