How Many Times?

How many times have you attempted a cache (that was still in existence) & yet you couldn't find it? To what lengths have you gone to sign that darned logbook? Please share your maddening stories.

We have tried eight, yes EIGHT times on this one. Its hider, OtisPug, is legendary in OC, but that's really no excuse. We got about 25 finds in between our first attempt & our find.

After a few disbarging attempts, (we were all over this place, various photos of the area about 50 ft. away from the cache through us off. Hey, we were newbies!) we asked for help. Another cacher give us this advice: bring a hand-mirror & a flashlight & go at night. Thus we discovered it was at the bottom of a sewer. But how? Was it resting in a ledge & then took a trip? Did it slip & drop from a nearby bush? Did we have to walk through the sewage tube from a park across the street to walk into here & nab the cache? (we thought this after we discovered that the guy knew no limits on his hides) After a few more nighttime attempts we finally found the piece of fishing line running from the surface to the cache. It was a truly victorious moment.

I think maybe three or four times for the one that gave me the most trouble. I look back on it now and realize I made soooo many newbie mistakes on that one! Even when I finally found it (by that time I had a good amount of experience, too).

I'm pretty proud of my "Found/Did Not Finds." I keep track of them in my profile and mark them with my own icon there:

vdbalamo's Just Peachy took me 2 months to find; I lost count at about 15 attempts. And it turns out that there were actually 2 copies of the cache at the time: It had been reported missing, so the owner's son had replaced it. About 4 months later, someone noticed that there were 2 of them; each one had been found by about half of the finders.

I had three DNFs on one cache that everyone else was finding first time, and on two of those DNFs I had help with me, and I'd had extra hints from the owner. The fourth time I went I brought gloves and thought "I'm going to find this cache if I have to crawl through every dadgum bush." I knelt down and heard a clunk as I lent on the side of a well camoflaged ammo can. Having missed it three times it must have taken me all of 30 seconds the fourth time.

Two caches in Maryland had eluded me... I have visited both of them twice... maybe three times and I finally had to give up because the job I was working on in the area was done...

Yowies

and

In a Can Down by the River

I think the problem with Yowies was the amount of overgrowth - not to mention that I was using my yellow etrex (routinely about 30 feet off the mark). Crossing the water was easy and fun but it was late July and the insects were not kind. Tried tweice and gave up twice. Never actually logged the not finds.

The "In a Can..." cache is in a great spot. The first time I tried for this I parked in a completely wrong spot and wasted about an hour bushwacking through some terrible woods... Finally... I took a different approach towards the cache area and parked in a better spot... Walked through the backyard of an abondoned house and down into the stream... Well once again I would have to say that they etrex was not behaving and was all over the place. The water was also a little high and fast and wasn't making it an easy search. Since it was Summertime it was fun to play and walka round in the stream.

Hopefully I will get back down into that area to look for those caches... ;)

Sadly, about ten days ago I made my TENTH attempt on Slippery Rock Creek I went about four before I e-mailed puppyman, 2 more then I saw him at the wing-ding and got some more hints, 3 more till I met up with Snowflower and got her hints, (she was escorted personally by puppyman through the Mills) and one more right before that wicked snowstorm last week. I may just give up, but if we get a nice day I might try again.

My max number of attempts so far is 3. I found Celebration Park on the 3rd attempt.

I have tried End of the Line 3 times with no success. I suspect you have to climb out onto parts of the bridge I am much to chicken to try. I have attempted to cheat by using my telescoping inspection mirror to look out in these nasty places. This spring I plan to take a group of guys I work with out for their first Geocaching adventure. This will be the last one of the day. I'm hoping the peer presure will be enough to get them climbing all over the bridge while stand on firm ground telling them where the GPS is pointing. If anybody reading this has found this cache and wants to give me a hint, I'm all ears.
