Caches Near Glasgow

Hi!

Ryanair have just started to fly between Glasgow and Goteborg (Sweden), and it's very cheap right now. We were thinking of perhaps flying over to Glasgow and do some caching and go to a local pub for some beers and food, and then fly back home again! Crazy aint it???? :) But the flight is incredible cheap, the ticket will cost us less than $12 per person roundtrip.

First of all, we don't know where the airport is, Ryanair seems to fly to smaller airports that sometimes are far away from the name of the destination. ("Frankfurt-Hahn" is more than 1 hour away from Frankfurt, the same with the "Stockholm"-airports they use in Sweden).

Are there any caches in Glasgowarea, can perhaps someone here give us some tip about nice caches? If someone can provide us with coordinates for central Glasgow would it be nice, so we can search on geocaching.com after caches in the area.

We will appreciate all the help we can get. And of course, if you are going to Sweden, don't hesitate to write in the nordic countries forum here at geocaching.com!!

Geocaching wishes,

Hedberg, Göteborg, Sweden

Hi there

Glad to hear that you are thinking about visiting Scotland to geocache. Glasgow airport is not right in the centre of the city, but its easy enough to get there from the airport. However, amazingly, there are very few caches in Glasgow; there are a couple on the south side of the city. The easiest one to get to in 'What the Butler Hid' which is located in Pollock Park where the Burrell Collection is, and there are buses that go there.

If Ryanair fly to Edinburgh you'd be much better off coming here (or even catch a train from Glasgow to Edinburgh), as there are loads of caches within walking distance or a short bus ride of the city centre. And again, its a quick bus ride from the airport into the city centre.

You can view the cache map at http://www.geocaching.com/map/england.asp

You could always hire a car. Glasgow is a short drive from some wonderful countryside and good caching. We can recommend the caching on the Isle of Bute if you manage to get that far!

Ryanair fly to Glasgow Prestwick Airport which is near Ayr, about 35km south of Glasgow city centre. There is a railway station attached to the airport with regular trains to Glasgow city centre which take about 45mins. As FOF says, there are not many caches in Glasgow itself, just "Isla Nublar" near the University which is a virtual cache and then "What the Butler Saw" and "The Warriors" which are a bit of a bus ride out into greater Glasgow. If your money can stretch to hiring a car at the airport - maybe about £40 / day, there are loads of excellent caches in the countryside between the airport and Glasgow and round the Firth of Clyde. If you are interested, I can send you their coordinates, but you will need a car to get to them.

Likewise, if the fares are so cheap, If I was to take a caching trip to Gothenburg, how easy is it to get to caches there?

Gothenburg are full with caches, there are a couple of hundreds caches in and just outside Göteborg.

Thera are about 500 caches within 50 miles area :)

Here is the coordinates for the "City" airport Ryanair use:

N57 46.495 / E011 52.099

There are at least 200 caches within 10 miles area.

The city of Gothenburg are splitted into two parts, mainland and a island. The airport is on the island and there are about 80 caches in the island.

So it will keep you busy for a while if you decide to take all caches here :)

And guess what? Almost every log are written in English and almost 99.9% av all cachedescriptions are written in English, so it is very easy to cache here. But it is a expensive country to visit, okay, I forgot - I'm talking to people from the UK. You know what I'm talking about - you are also taxed to death... :)

I forgot to say, that there are a lot of caches in the centre of Gothenburg, where you don't need a car to get to them. There is a public transportation system with buses, boats, trains and tram (cable-car).

In case you needed some further pursuasion to come to the UK , a British pint ( 568ml) should cost only 30 SEK in the south and in scotland you should be able to get a pint of 80 shilling ale for about 25 SEK ( the 80 shilling referes to the old tax system on different strength beer. 60 shilling is like Latt Ol, 70 shilling is like mellan Ol and 80 shilling is like stark Ol, there is also 90 shilling but we only clean the brass with that !). :(

Okay, you win! We will come over right away! :(

By the way, how did your trip to Stockholm go? I remember your name from the Nordic forum where you mentioned you were going to Stockholm a couple of months ago... Did you find any caches??

Hej Hedberg, Well the Trip to Stockholm was very good thanks. I managed to find a few microcaches. Stockholm spring, Sott & Riddarholmen. I tried to find Humble bee as well but poor weather/GPS reception provided too much of a challenge. I Have visited Goteborg previously but it was before I discovered geocaching so I missed all the fun! I can recomend it as a great city to visit. If you like fresh seafood you must visit Fiskekrogen restaurant. MVH, John.
