GO West Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 N47 47.745 W122 20.662 Nearest Caches: within 1 mile: 3 within 2 miles: 16 within 3 miles: 36 Is this a high concentration of caches? Does anyone know of a more concentrated area? I am curious to see other examples. It's kind of a puzzle: how to determine the area of greatest cache density -- the Mecca of caching. On the other hand, the "approvers" may not conisder this an appropriate topic -- to live in an area of high density may be considered a dubious distinction. GO West
Planet Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 Mecca = California and NJ as far as I know. 1 mile radius form me - 1 cache 2 mile radius - 2 3 mile radius - 9 100 mile radius 1966 That ought to keep me busy for a while
briansnat Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 (edited) I think Atlanta and Nashville both have very high concentrations of caches. Washington DC is up there, but they're mostly virtuals. Northern New Jersey is certainly up there. I have 33 caches within 5 miles of my house. 76 within 10 miles. 244 within 20 miles and 2,221 within 100 miles. And the best part is that not many of these (at least the ones within 20 miles) are "drive and dumps". The majority are interesting hunts in nice areas. Edited November 23, 2003 by briansnat
ChrisCindy Posted November 23, 2003 Posted November 23, 2003 Yeah Nashville has a high cache density.
robertlipe Posted November 23, 2003 Posted November 23, 2003 Well, the last time this came up, I posted some numbers in my August 9 response that may help decide. Yes, the actual numbers are likely somewhat stale by now, at it's skewed by my travel destinations, but there was a lot of legwork that went into that table that might make triage easier. Last I looked, there were a couple of (overlapping) 5 mile circles in Nashville with over 120.
RJFerret Posted November 23, 2003 Posted November 23, 2003 See this link, currently NJ tops the list with MA, RI and CT right behind. Enjoy, Randy
hikemeister Posted November 23, 2003 Posted November 23, 2003 South Pine cache (GCG2BW), located west of Melbourne, Florida -- in this park (Wickham Park), there are 9 caches within a 0.5 mile radius !
Web-ling Posted November 23, 2003 Posted November 23, 2003 Yeah Nashville has a high cache density. ...if gazillions of film canisters in parking lots hidden at the bases of light posts or magneted to the back of street signs count as "caches"...
DavidMac Posted November 23, 2003 Posted November 23, 2003 I traveled to Minneapolis earlier this summer and was surprised at the high number of caches there. Something like 432 within a 20 mile radius. None of the ones I saw were of the 'pill bottle in a lightpole' type, but many were full sized caches in parks. Cache density drops off quickly when you leave the suburbs, though. -DavidMac
axle59 Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 Las Vegas and San Diego both have plenty of them in the immediate area too.
Wacka Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 Tri-Valley (East SF Bay), CA area. 24 within 3 miles of my house. 58 within 5 miles. 202 within 10 miles. 520 within 20 miles. 3240 within 100 miles.
briansnat Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 24 within 3 miles of my house.58 within 5 miles. 202 within 10 miles. 520 within 20 miles. 3240 within 100 miles. That's certainly going to be hard to beat!
Doc-Dean Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 (edited) I am not going to break any records here: 0 Caches within 1 mile of home 6 Caches within 5 miles (3 are mine) 24 Caches within 10 miles 48 Caches within 20 miles 117 within 50 miles 332 within 100 miles 978 within 500 miles Edited November 24, 2003 by Doc-Dean
joefrog Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 I think Atlanta and Nashville both have very high concentrations of caches. Washington DC is up there, but they're mostly virtuals. Check out the caches in Huntsville, AL area... pretty thick up there because of NASA & the space center! Huntsville
hedberg Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 At our home in Göteborg, Sweden, are it: 0-1mi = 6 caches 0-2mi = 21 caches 0-5mi = 95 caches within 99.3mi are there 628 caches.
Pharmadude Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 (edited) Just to update my previous thread which addresses this same topic, this location N 37.885 W 121.305 has 3,470 caches within 100 mile radius Edited November 24, 2003 by Pharmadude
Spider Woman Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 I don't think I'll ever find all of them within easy driving distance from me. From center of Stanford University campus (half-way between San Francisco and San Jose, CA): Within 1 mile: 6 Within 5 miles: 67 Within 10 miles: 207 Within 25 miles: 832 Within 50 miles: 1674 Within 100 miles: 2961
Markwell Posted November 24, 2003 Posted November 24, 2003 While not as high as some of the others listed here, there's a cache in Batavia, Illinois, that seems to be the epicenter of Chicago area caches. It helps that it was in the vicinity of our 2003 Annual Picnic. Starting on the cache On the Right Side of the Tracks, the search looks like this: Within 1 mile: 5 Within 3 miles: 39 Withing 5 miles: 52 Within 10 miles: 163 Within 50 miles: 844 Within 100 miles: 1,436 Within 150 miles: 2,795 Not bad for an area that has a major lake just 36 miles to the east.
wray_clan Posted November 25, 2003 Posted November 25, 2003 Mecca is on the Arabian Penninsula. Actually, I have a test on the Islamic culture on Wednesday. I think I should be able to tell you more. North Orange County & Monterey are both good places. For our cache, Squirel Creek: 1 mile - 6 5 miles - 53 10 miles - 174 15 miles - 288 100 miles - slightly upwards of 3,000 (this also includes San Diego) Wacka, that's pretty impressive.
