anyone get a lock on WAAS 47(West Coast)

Recommended Posts

Guest HomeChicken

I live in California and I'm not sure I have ever gotten a lock on this satellite. Is it working? Has anyone gotten a lock on it?

I was reading about it here:

I live in the Bay Area, and I get lock on 47 occasionally, and 35 never. 47 is low in the southwest sky, and only when I have really good SW views can I get it , and then only by inclining the unit in that direction (dadgum little patch antenna on my eTrex legend has a lot of trouble picking up stuff near the horizon).

All in all, i seldom find WAAS useful, and only enable it when I have some hope of getting 47, and when I've having trouble zeroing in on the cache.

Do you have WAAS enabled? On my gps (GPSMAP 76) its factory default has WAAS turned off - had to dig through the menus in order to find it and turn it on.

Well PneumaticDeath did make me feel better. I has the small patch antenna, unit also.

Khao Mun Gai, Yep I turned on and off the WAAS feature a few times to see if I could get it to work

just read this on a we siet

"Are there any special requirements to use WAAS? Yes. You must turn power save OFF and RTCM IN must not be active.

"So I turned off the battery saver and now I get more than just the 30 birds I was getting and even detected the #47 WAAS I was looking for but havent locked on it yet. I am getting bids up into the 50's numbered by Garmin..let you know if I ever lock on 47

thanks for all your help!!!

P.S> whats RTCM IN on the garmin eTrex Legend or Vista?

HomeChicken,

make sure you go to as open an area as you can find when trying to get your initial waas lock, and give it plenty of time to acquire the birds, as it takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to get a waas lock the first time. i am 30 miles north of salt lake city and can lock on both 35 and 47 waas satelites. after you achieve the initial lock your subsequent locks will take much less time, 1 to 2 minutes, sometimes faster.

i use an etrex vista gps fyi. hope this helps

Well I got a answer from Garmin and this is what I wrote, and their reply, and my reply to their reply:

"I live in Southern Ca. and cannot get a lock on the

WAAS satellite 47 could you help me with this? I'm not sure the screen has

ever shown 47 on it I have WAAS enabled would I need to reset the unit and

if so how? Thanks "

quote:
Dear Sir,

>

> Get the unit up high and faced to the South by southwest. Let it sit

>undisturbed for 20 minutes.

>Thank you and best Regards,

So I wrote back a little sad and discouraged with the help

"Did that

but maybe you should ADD THIS to your FAQ and your answer book :

1st unselect battery saver and 2nd enable the WAAS feature THEN 3rd you will be able to take the unit up high and leave undisturbed and get a lock on the 35 or 47 birds

Found this answer on a non-Garmin site..maybe look to it for some support questions you get and refer the customer there:

"

Then I get back a answer 2 minutes later

quote:
Dear Sir,

You told me you had WAAS enabled. I took you at your word.

So I say Back:

"I did, and my word was good. This will not let the feature work unless you have the battery saver off Always remember the first step"

Garmin new support employee

So I don't know if it was called for me to be sarcastic but Hey when they don't have a step by step guide to answer questions and answer on the fly I think it was called for...Keep em in check!

The D means that your receiver is applying the Differential Corrections supplied by the WAAS satellite to the other satellites.

Well that's cool... I saw that for the first time yesterday evening... I thought that since I was getting 8 foot accuracy that the "D" meant dadgum accurate! icon_biggrin.gif
