+pnew Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 I just moved from the small town of Houston (over a million people and 500 caches) to the even smaller town of Waco (just over a hundred thousand people and 50 caches). Lets list the pros and cons of moving to a smaller town... Quote
+Team GPSaxophone Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Pro: New territory to find and place caches Cons: fewer caches to find, more miles on the car to get those caches, the stigma of that FBI/Cult thing a few years back Took sun from sky, left world in eternal darkness Quote
+pnew Posted August 22, 2003 Author Posted August 22, 2003 great idea! I could have a branch davidian themed cache or a Baylor basketball corruption themed cache. man this is gonna be great! Quote
+woodsters Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Well we moved from the 2nd largest city in Georgia (Augusta) to one in Massachusetts that may have around 10k at the most. Granted we are 45 minutes from Boston, but we are in the hills and country. In Augusta, you are lucky to have 10 or so caches in a 35 mile radius, where as when I download my pocket query for the closest 400, it goes to just 37 miles away. That's not including the 25-30 I've found locally as well... To us, it's a pro..The cons are paying twice as much for rent than our mortgage payment in the Augusta area. The house up here is about 25 yrs old and lucky if it's 1500 sq ft(has basement though and on 2 acres). The house we left down south we bough brand new in summer 2001, had 2400sq ft... sigh..oh well....my wifes pay is a little higher up here too... +Brian - Team A.I. Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 If I were to move to Billings, MT like the in-laws seem to want, I'd have to drive a good 60 miles for a single cache, as I wiped out the FIVE in town during my vacation. There's only about 250 caches in the entire state. Sheesh. Brian Team A.I. Quote
+TEAM 360 Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Well, at least your Benchmark numbers will go up... Quote

+Renegade Knight Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Less traffic Less BS More open land surrounding that you can get to to play in. Less 'culture' (No opera either) Less self centered, the city is the end all and be all of existance people who would puke if they saw a cow pie. Quote
LQQKING4U Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 PROS- More freedom-City folk like making a bunch of laws (city ordinances). Quote
+TeamK-9 Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 Pro to moving to a small town/new town with very little caches: More room to place tons of caches, and make a name for yourself, as an innovator/jumpstarter of the sport in your town. ---- Extra batteries for GPS, don't leave home without 'em. SombreHippie Posted August 22, 2003 Posted August 22, 2003 I'm looking at the same problem for an anticipated move next summer... moving from a 1100 within 100mile radius to a 17 within 100mile radius... We're trying to think of ways to remedy this before actually moving A great serial killer once said, "Beauty is only skin deep. Trust me, I've looked..." Quote

+Brian - Team A.I. Posted August 23, 2003 Posted August 23, 2003 Oh, absolutely. I'd have to introduce them to what urban caching was all about, and saturate the area with ammo cans. Glad the local army/navy supply place had hundreds in the back. I might clean 'em out. Brian Team A.I. Quote

dsandbro Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 Waco is still a big city. A small town is less than 3000 residents. Anything bigger than that is just too urban. =========================================================== "The time has come" the Walrus said "to speak of many things; of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and Kings". +Czarniecki314 Posted August 24, 2003 Posted August 24, 2003 I moved from Brooklyn, NY to Bennington, VT (exactly... where?). Didn't start caching until after moving, but believe me, the lack of caches is enough to get me out every time I head back to see mom! Quote
Mr. Big Posted August 25, 2003 Posted August 25, 2003 100,000 small? I'm lucky enough to have moved back to the town in which I grew up -- except that then it had a population of 7,000 and today it's close to 35,000. We're just beyond the SF Bay Area mess -- close enough that real estate prices are outrageous (our tract house on a city lot, at 1,800 sq. ft. is probably worth over $400K today), but far enough that it's still a smallish town. Lots of caches nearby, but few in town. What's good about small towns: Coupla years ago, we accompanied our daughter to her high school's freshman orientation night. Standing with parents of kids our daughter went to nursery school with, greeting the staff at the school (some of whom taught there when I was a student) and visiting around the room, daughter said, "Geez, Dad, you know everybody here! I'm going to feel like I'm being watched or something." My only reply was a smile. If you don't like people in your business, you might not like a genuine small town. But if you like knowing that you're all part of something just a little bigger than yourself, you'll love it. We're up to almost a dozen stoplights in the county, and the only direction I'll move except under extreme duress is smaller. Quote
