goecaching at Burning Man '02

A great place to keep "Dead Heads" off of the streets for a little while. It abounds in drug use, psuedo-socialism, and dangerous behavior. The ranks of burning man teem with enviro-wacks. The general synopsis is "anything goes and anything is cool as long as your actions doesn't hurt anyone else" which, of course, is a built in excuse for bad behavior and an assumption of "victimless crime". It is todays youth with to much time on their hands, and a lack cultural accountability governing ones actions. Oh, yeah, bring the kids!!! "

A "rave" party, only much much bigger.

or like Woodstock without the culture.

Anything goes. Anything.

Frankly, they can't even describe it.

They ain't singing Kum-ba-yah, either.

It's in the dessert, far away from doing any permanent damage to those not involved.

There are a couple "Team Burning Man" geocachers out there, so I'm sorry if I offend. I'm probably in the 'morally conservative' minority out here, so my preaching is done.

Let me qualify my earlier statement: If there is a cache that is going to be in conjunction with Burning Man while it is going on I would caution that this would not necessarily be a kid-friendly cache.

Likewise, I would be sure to post the dates of Burning Man '02 on Burning Man (August 26 - September 2, 2002)

Frankly I don't understand why on earth if it is well known that drugs and other illegal activities go on at Burning man the police don't go there in force. Is it on private land? If not, then the police should just roam about durring the entire time, with a highly visible presence and busting anyone bold enough to sell or do drugs whilst they are there.

ummmm....not sure what to say here....so ummm, well errrr, uhhhh, well I guess that's it.

It is tough to P. O. a rational person by asking a question. I was just answering the question, shaded with my dislike for this fairly popular "high mass" of foolish and dangerous behavior. There are plenty of minors that will attend this thing again this year. So, although I may have sounded upset, I really wasn't. Just giving you a clear view of my opinion of Burning Man.

I give myself very good advice but i very seldom follow it.

I've promised myself that i would never again post on the general forums about as many times that i've promised myself that i would never log a locationless geocache.

Leave Burning Man alone. It's no worse than what we do.

I'm sure if you asked all the deputies and paramedics working overtime that have to deal with the hundreds of social fu*k-ups every year you get a much less PC opinion. Like mine. It's not a "counter culture" or an "alternative lifestyle experience". It's a filthy, dirty mess populated by kooks that have damaged minds caused by bad childhoods and later on excessive drug use.

It's not art: It's regression, in public, on dope.

That's why it's held in the middle of a dry lakebed. Can't damage dirt. Trust me, unless you have your very own Tinfoil-Hat, avoid the place.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but don't bet on it.

No worse than what we do? What is that supposed to mean? How can you compare a mass gathering to participate in extremely risky sexual behavior, drug use/abuse, and all the other crap that goes on at Burning Man with hiding some ammo boxes in the woods and parks, posting the co-ordinates, and going out to find them?

What we do is family friendly, what those at Burning Man do is a product of growing up in non-friendly families. (not always, but often...there are some people who come from great families and still turn out to be losers and abusers)

I went down the fools path of self destruction myself a bit, but I never got too deep in it, and frankly couldn't stand all the B.S. that those who were intrenched in that "deathstyle" spewed, so after a short while I got real, cleaned up, and flew straight. (I'm one of the ones who DIDN'T come from a messed up family, and perhaps that's what gave me the wisdom not to get stuck in it, and the insight to see just how full of it those who were intrenched in it were, rather than get dragged down with them)

Burning Man is an annual experiment in temporary community dedicated to radical self-expression and radical self-reliance.

Families are welcome. At no point does it say to go to burning man you must consume large amounts of alcohol, use/abuse drugs, or participate in risky sexual behavior. There are a lot of very normal successful people that choose to make the journey to Black Rock City.

There are probably just as many drug/alcohol/sex abusing geocachers out there as there are at burning man. So lets not be so quick to judge. icon_rolleyes.gif

I must say I'm disturbed by the comments I'm reading here. Yes, SOME people who go to Burning Man engage in risky behaviour, but the vast majority don't. Sure, there's some drug use and sex, but people here are making it sound like a 20,000 member drugged-up orgy!

People go there to express themselves in ways that ordinary society doesn't necessarily accept, but that doesn't mean it's wrong, in fact it's important. That expression comes in many different forms, and that's why it's difficult to describe.

See the article linked below to read Bruce Sterling's account of going to Burning Man a few years ago - with his kids.

I noticed though they claim to be all about freedom, self expression and few rules, they do keep a tight lid on cameras and video cameras, you MUST register them, they MUST be tagged, and there is control over where when and what you can photograph or film....almost sounds like they want to keep something from people.

Oh, and so far as people who take thier kids, I know of people who take thier kids to Dead concerts, and drop acid or smoke pot with thier kids in the room. I know folks who swear like a sailor around and at thier kids, who smoke around thier kids, get flat out drunk around thier kids, drive drunk with thier kids, don't seat belt their kids, let their little kids watch violent movies and porn. There are plenty of people who are lousy parents, so just because some folks would take their kids to an event where essentially most rules are off (as well as cloths, inhibitions, morality) and it is all justified under the guise of artistic expression is not suprising. Like I said earlier....I ventured down this path myself for a while (a little more than a year) and frankly most of it is nothing more than bad and destructive behavior disguised as free thinking and artistic expression. (keep telling yourself over and over...I'm just a free spirit, not a self destructive nut case...just a free spirit, see the art in me? I'm so creative...here....have another hit.)

Hutchfx,

I've been trying to figure out how to do

geocaching at burningman. I think it would be

an excellent way to explore some of the

less travelled areas. Three ideas:

1. Hook up with playa net to host a

geocache board.

2. Have an initial cache that contains

coordinates for any others. Caches could be

linked to form a tour.

3. Attach cable ties with coordinates to

sign posts, a la

The nice thing about the idea #3 is that

people not-in-the-know could discover it.

With idea 1 and 2, some sort of announcement

would have to be made. Maybe Jackrabbit

speaks would post it?

If you'll be caching and you'll be hot and naked, you'd do well to watch out for those ammo cans. You don't want to get anything caught in the lid..... icon_redface.gif

I've been reading this thread with interest and even gave some thought to the pro-Burning Man posts. I consider myself to be libertarian and generally don't wish to denegrade or push for sanctions on that which doesn't pose a direct threat to myself or society in general. I believe we would all do well to MYOB more often.

However, I've also learned to follow the money trail. I don't know which was more humorous, finding out that this is a for-profit activity or reading the lengthy *excuse* for making it a for-profit venture. Typical liberal response, it's not *their* fault!

I doubt many cachers will be at Burning Man. We are mostly a collection of geeks and nerds with a heavy dose of redneck. Not exactly the free spirit, hippy crowd, halucinating in the nude.

It would be kind of interesting to see what kind of caches these acid heads could come up with though.

Track down this travel bug and/or Rev. Dahlia....

http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=10666

I have that bug. Well, at least according to the website I do. I live in Los Angeles, and am an ex-hippie. I know several people who are going to Burning Man. It is a little too pagan for my tastes. (understatement there) I passed Q onto my sister-in-law in San Francisco as she and her roommates are going to go to Burning Man. She assured me on her last visit down here that when she returned home, she would not only take it to Burning Man to fulfill its goal, but would immediately log her possession on the website.

I have learned a lesson that passing bugs onto people that are not specifically cachers results in the bug not getting logged. I am frustrated, as I have another bug out there like that. I doubt I will try to turn on another person to our sport by handing them a bug.

If anyone is interested in getting Q and taking that bug yourself, I can give you the info of where in SF it is. I would rather have a cacher take the bug and actually log it, so let me know.

Otherwise, I know it will make it, but not sure it will ever get logged out of my possession.

Arghh.
