BassoonPilot
Yeah, things like that happen all the time and can be really irksome. So are obviously false logs that are brought to owner's attention, finds claimed after finding only the first stage of multicaches, logs for virtual or physical caches that don't fulfill the requirements listed on the cache page, etc., etc., etc.. It's up to cache owners to enforce "the rules," but very, very few of them do. I think that by their inaction, owners are encouraging that type of behavior. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
The guys a newbie. Somone direct him to this thread. Quote Link to comment
+El Diablo
Looks like he found it and then it was moved so he found it again. The 3rd time it looks like he went with a new cacher and logged it a 3rd time. Maybe it was improper to log them each time...but it looks innocent enough to me. Maybe you need to kindly point out his mistake on logging to make a better cacher out of him. Stop clenching your teeth...it will give you a headache. +Mark 42
Explain to him that a find is (in spirit) a discovery, and that when you return to a cache, if you want to make note of it, you can choose "Post a Note", so that your total number of finds doesn't become artificially inflated. Also, explain that, some people look at & compare the number of Finds vs. Did Not Finds to help them decide if the cache is within their abilities, or the time they have available on a given day, and by adding finds it could make it look like it's easier to find than it actually is. Let him know that he can still go back to the online logbook for that cache, and can edit his entries and change all but the first one to "Notes" instead of "Finds". Just today I changed a Note to a Find... I was griping about one where the coords at the top were for the parking area, and the actual cache coords were down in the description. This makes all of the linkable maps way off, so that a person who is trying to find it with just a map & compass will be out of luck when he uses the maps he printed from the cache's links. I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people. Quote Link to comment
+flask
i don't think it has moved. nor do i think he's trying to cheat. i think it's an innocent mistake, but i don't wuite know how to send him the message without sounding like i think i'm the cache police. which i'm not. i logged it this afternoon and ran across it, and, well, i'm kind of torn between 'help the guy out" and "none of my business". it doesn't matter if you get to camp at one or at six. dinner is still at six. +flask
you're right, of course, diablo, but i'm not sure how to go about it with the necessary tact... i'm kind of famous for my lack of it. i think that while my teeth are clenched i should not even attempt it. maybe tomorrow when i'm fresher. i was at a cache once where i guy put a food bar in. i took it as my item. i did not mention it when he asked about caching conventions (it was an open ended question and not specifically in reference to the food), but i directed him to the FAQ. i didn't want to tell him about the rule, because he was out with his young son and i didn't want to correct him in front of the child. i have every indication that he has indeed gone and read the FAQ. he is bright and talented as a cacher and becoming locally famous. NOW i know him well enough to tell him "no FOOD, knucklehead"! but there's no reason to do so anymore. it doesn't matter if you get to camp at one or at six. dinner is still at six. martmann
I had a newer cacher log a find twice on my cache, the second time was to pick up a TB, innocent enough. A delicate email was the answer. I feel the cache owner should be the one to write the email though. If I had made a similar mistake when I started, I would really want somebody to tell me. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down?
