Rounding coordinates?

A cache was just place in our area with the coordinates displayed in DD.MM.SSSS format instead of the familiar DD.MM.SSS. What do you do with the last number in the seconds? I dropped the last second and couldn't find the cache. Apparently 2 other cachers also did and they weren't successful either. I just loaded the coordinates into my eTrex with EasyGPS and it rounded them both up. How much of a difference would this make? Thanks in advance Rock33

Sorry for the mistake and thanks for the reply. The posted coordintes were N 40° 35.0559 W 079° 03.2647. Do I round to N 40° 35.056 W 079° 03.265 or just drop the last number?

The third decimal digit represents approximately 5 feet so it won't really make a difference since the fourth is dealing with tenths of 5 feet much more than the acuracy of the GPS. The USGS gives benchmark coordinates to 5 decimal digits or a fraction of an inch - but who's measuring? icon_wink.gif

Rock... do you have a link to this cache? Did you say other folks had trouble with this one as well?

I have a suspicion that the cache hider made a mistake on this one. It almost looks to me like the coords that the hider wanted to put were:

N40°35'05.59"

W079°03'26.47"

Which, if I am correct, would equate to a geocaching-compatible:

N40°35.093

W079°03.441

Try those.

Is the format this or is the format that icon_confused.gif if it's not this one then it might be that one but why does one have to guess/assume.

What happened to minute' marks or second" marks, why should one have to guess? Formats can be written so they are very very clear and unambiguous.

Cheers, Kerry.

I never get lost icon_smile.gif everybody keeps telling me where to go icon_wink.gif
