Disposable Digital Camera

Recommended Posts

Being sold by Ritz Camera. Takes 25 shots. Has a flash, and a self-timer, so everyone can be in the shot. No LCD screen. Holds 25 two-megapixel shots. Cost is about $11, and that includes 4x6 prints, plus the image files burned on a picture CD. That's probably a little cheaper or about even with a film camera, once the cost of processing is figured in.

The story's here.

probably got to rip the thing open to get to the memory cards because they didn't cut a whole in the side for the cable hook up. icon_razz.gif

They don't throw it away, just as they don't throw away those "disposable" film cameras. They recycle them. When you return the camera, they take out the film, re-package the camera, and sell it again. They'll do the same thing with the digital cameras.

Except that there's no consumable to be removed. All they'll have to do is extract the data and reset the camera. It's like a video rental - take it, use it, bring it back and put it on the shelf for the next person who wants to "borrow" it.

I listened to the Kim Komando radio program www.komando.com this weekend she talked about these she said they are just the standard disposable camers. they just scan the pics and give you a cd with them on don't waste your money I would be courious if anyone has torn one apart and seen if it has film or some kind of storage media

Yeah, I've seen those like Kim Komando is talking about around for a while now. Might as well use a regular camera and order a photo CD during processing for just $4 extra. That way you have the digital prints and hard copies.

But I think the cam discussed here is different and is actually a digicam. You can re-take the shots on them, which isn't really an option for disposable film cameras.

They are smoking saying it is enough to make 8x10 photos. I have a Nikon CoolPix 5000 5 megapixel camera and it bearly makes the mark on 8x10 photos.

I'm sure that's true, But I think the fate of most cache camera pictures is to end up online, which really isn't very demanding and the original poster said it might end up being cheaper (slightly). Here is an example of a picture I recently took using my 2 Megapixel camera, it's been resampled to a lower resolution and compressed.

I think 2 Megapixels is (way) more than needed for a cache camera. In fact after resampling to 96 dpi, this picture works out to about .81 Megapixels

It would be bad if the batteries in the camera went dead if it sat in a cache a long time. With a film disposable camera, it does not depend on battery power so it can sit in a cache for quite a long time and still work.

This digital camera is a good idea but I am sure it cost more than $11 to make these cameras. As long as people do return them and they can make a profit it just might work. It will only be available in 14 U.S. cities which I am sure are test markets to see if they really want to go nation wide.

It would be bad though if you did get one and put it in a cache and then a little while later it goes under and you have no way of getting the pictures off.

I too have a cheapy 2meg mini pen cam with no display to see how your pic turned out. I just take lotsa pics, why not? Its free. I just don't like carrying our $600 digicam out in the boonies climbing over rocks and crossing streams. I'm constantly suprised at how good a lot of the pics turn out on the cheapo camera actually. I don't see the disposable digital going over very well when you can buy a basic digicam at Wally World for 40 bucks anyway.

someday we'll look back on all this and plow into a parked car.

"Ritz/Wolf charges about $11 for processing 25 4-by-6 prints and a photo CD."

OK, so after 5 uses you've paid for a cheap $100 digital camera that you own! (No developing required...)

Most places here charge $0.32 for 4x6's, and with a screen, you only develop the good ones, not all 25!

(The article might be wrong though, as the original poster said that developing was included...)

The more details I get, this worse it looks to me...
