So they called the COPs

Recommended Posts

Curious to see if anyone else has ever had the pleasure of 'being detained' while waiting for the police. In my quest to be the the 'first to find' I made the mistake of not realizing that I was searching for a cache in a place that it really shouldn't have been placed in. There's nothing like having just picked up the cache only to realize that there are 3 security guards standing 20 feet away watching you. No charges were laid, but I am banned from entering the property for 1 year. Oh well<g>

Tell us more! What cache, where? Who called the police, and in what way was this a wrong place to be?

I don't really want to name the cache since it was pulled. It was located on private property, at a harness racing track. They take security seriously since they also have a casino on site. Apparently they had been watching me for about 5 minutes on TV (guy wandering around holding some device, soaking wet). They were rather nice and I was very co operative. They did mention that they were a bit on edge since they had been robbed a few day earlier (plus they get bomb threats like everyone else).

A couple friends and I were questioned by the police last weekend. You can read about it here. They had never heard of Geocaching, so we explained how it works and showed them the cache. They were pretty cool with it, although they probably thought we were a little crazy. icon_biggrin.gif

Yep!

On a day that I had my sidearm with me, I was stopped by park rangers in a public park where said weapons were legal. However, this isn't the reason I was stopped. It appears that snooping around some large rocks and a lightpole looking for a tupperware container was what spooked them. icon_smile.gif I readily identified my weapon, and provided all requested documentation/information. In fact, while they were running me for warrants, I was able to explain the sport of geocaching, leaving the female officer of the two very interested in the sport. A couple of regular uniformed officers were walking through the park also, and stopped to join the party. For reasons unknown, they ran me AGAIN, even though I was cleared the first time. They all left shortly thereafter, with the female officer wishing me good luck and hoping I find the cache.

***It should be noted that on the other side of the park, a celebration for a Sikh individual killed in a hate crime shortly after 9/11 by a white American was going on. The added security in the area was to ensure that we didn't have Part II of the Sikh killings because of how they looked. I had read about the event that morning, but didn't realize it was in THIS park, as I entered from the other end only a short distance from the cache.

I got questioned by a cop while looking for a cache this evening. I was nice and showed him my GPS while explaining the sport.

He seemed pretty interested. He wrote down the website and may give it a try.

He warned me to be careful of not so nice people that wander the area from time to time and let me go on my way.

It has been my experience that you will get more understanding from a cop than a security guard. The cop will usually let you go on your way and may even take interest in what you are doing. A security guard will usually question you to no end, hassle you every chance they get and be as rude and mean as they like.

I used to work in security in my youth and know all to well what a rent a cop can and cannot do. They are private citizens, same as you and I. That is the extent of their legal authority. If it would be illegal for you to harass someone, it is illegal for them to do it as well. Many security guards tend to think that they are cops and like to act like they are. Remember that next time security is giving you a work over. Be nice, but remember your rights in dealing with them.

I have never been lost. Been awful confused for a few days, but never lost!

I had an experience where I thought I was going to be detained. It was while I was looking for a cache in the Omaha area. After explaining to the officer what I was going I was surprised when he stated that not only was he aware of the hobby, he new where the cache was, but would not give me any clues. To make this even more interesting a group of teenagers started to take an interest in my activities and he chased them off so I could log the cache. It just goes to show that not all encounters with law enforcement end up on a negative note.

Lost? Keep going. You're making good time anyway!!

On the April 16th log of Gnome's Night Raid, a local cacher told this story.

He went out with his brother and family to do this night-only cache and the nearby residents got suscicious at the sight of 6 people going into the woods with flashlights and called the police. While they were in the woods at night poking around the police arrived, ran the license plates and found out a 3rd brother lived around the corner, off they went to question him. 3rd brother opens the door to the cops, ends up explaining geocaching to them, the cops agree that everything is cool then, as they are leaving, a real B&E is in progress right down the road. The cops drive a few hundred meters and arrest the thieves as they are leaving the place.

Without the suspicious geocaching activity, those other guys would not have been caught. It worked out ok.

This is my rifle.

There are many like it, but this one is MINE.

My rifle is my best friend. It is my life.

I must master it as I must master my life.

My rifle without me is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless.

I must fire my rifle true.

I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me.

I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will...

My rifle and myself know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our bursts, nor the smoke we make.

We know it is the hits that count. We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life.

Thus, I will learn it as a brother.

I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its sights, and its barrel.

I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage.

I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready.

We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God I swear this creed.

My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country.

We are the masters of our enemy.

We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until there is no enemy, but PEACE.

i was detained while benchmarking. is that close enough? i was very polite, but what i really wanted to say was:

"i care not one bit for YOUR heightened state of alert. now get out of my way. i'm playing GAMES here."

i wanted to, but i didn't.

it doesn't matter if you get to camp at one or at six. dinner is still at six.

While I was searching forthis cache on a closed down freeway off-ramp, a California Highway Patrol cruiser pulled up and stop on freeway shoulder to ask what I was doing there. I manage to explain to him over the traffic noise and he let me continue after I promised to stay on my side of the barriers.

-- I found it in the last place I looked.
