Guest Exocet
Well, what happened to those two guys? Jerry Connelly and Dave Ulmer placed some of the first caches, along with Mike Teague (who's still alive. ). So far, I've never seen either of them log a visit anywhere or place any new caches. So, I'm just wondering what's up with them. Link to comment
Guest Mike_Teague
Dave apparently gave up on the game sometime last year.. He said he got bored with it or something like that... He went ahead with his various other GPS related game ideas.. none of which have worked as well as the original geocaching... Link to comment
Guest jeremy
I've only exchanged one or two emails with Dave Ulmer early on, but as far as I know he's not been actively involved in the game as long as this site has existed. Who's Jerry Connelly? Mike Teague is very much alive and active in the forums and with Geocaching Jeremy Link to comment
Guest Exocet
n in the *** to get to - really out there in the ol' wilderness. I notice that Dave Ulmer logged a visit both in the logbook and on Geocaching.com for the Project APE cache on Sauvie's Island today - but his post on Geocaching.com dissapeared a few hours later. Deleted either by Dave or Project APE, I assume. Link to comment
Guest Ron Streeter
I had the displeasure of reading Dave's spiteful post on Project Ape Mission #2, and anyone who wants the details of the editing and deletion should go to the Project APE url. Out of respect for Jeremy I will not reveal what Dave said. Ron 19H/18F Link to comment
Guest madphishmonger
IIRC Ulmer quit geocaching because of website politics *cough* jeremy *cough* although I can't find the message where I read that. What did he say on the APE #2 log? I want the dirt. Link to comment

Dave and I have only exchanged emails a few times in the past in order to respond to reporter inquiries. Jeremy Link to comment

Lots have happened since then so something could have happened. Sorry I don't know more. Jeremy Link to comment
Guest Mike_Teague
As far as I can tell, (I dont know if he would agree) he left because I wouldn't put his virtual caches on my site with the "real" caches... I've always thought of that as a completely different game than geocaching, and I didnt really have the means or desire to start keeping two different lists of caches -- remember I was doing the whole thing manually, in a text editor at the time.. He disagreed and decided to withdraw from the whole game and promote his new activity called "Wonderts" which was basically nothing but waypoint-sharing... That's basically the story... Guest Mike_Teague
looking thru soem of my archives i found an old message from the old gps-stash list from egroups... this is one of dave's last messages about geocaching... notice the date... the game had barely been around a month, and he was already done! From: "David J. Ulmer" Date: Mon Jun 12, 2000 10:45pm Subject: Problems with GeoCaching... You really don't see the problems with a sport until you get deeply involved in it. As the one that has placed the most stashes so far, I began to see the problems that it created. Some of my stashes are placed on tree farms owned by a large corporation. They are not, No Trespassing areas but they are private property. I didn't think too much about it at first because woods is woods around here, and a cache bucket seems like a pretty benign thing. The problem I saw was with the published coordinates attached to an uninvited bucket attached to my name could some day cause trouble. Some corporate dude five years from now could decide to prosecute me for littering or something just for the fun of it. For that reason I've decided to remove the stash buckets but keep the coordinates that are interesting for another game. The second major problem I found with geocaching was that you couldn't easily place them in urban areas or other areas of special interest. One of the goals I had for geocaching was to attract people to some of those "special spots" that only local people know about. I know of many unique spots in the urban area that I would like to identify for people to visit. I tried the CyberStashing concept that seemed to solve all the problems, but that was a flop, it was too complicated. So now I'm on to the Wondert game. Looking for places where just being there is the reward. I think it might work, I'll let you know when I get back from vacation. I know my Billy Graham stash would make a good Wondert and probably Williams Lake too. The two cyberstashes are certainly candidates. I'll see what other Wonderts I can find. So go visit my Wonderts and see what you think. Dave... Link to comment
