+woodsters Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 Got a question on the PC Cables for the Garmins owners out there. I was on the Garmin website for my Gecko 201 and it listed the accessory pc cable as the same one that the Etrex uses. Do all the Garmins use the same pc cable? Also besides ordering online somewhere (btw where's the place?), where can I go and purchase the cable? Does Walmart carry them? I know target had the Etrex GPS there but never paid attention about the cables, do they carry them? Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump Quote
+sept1c_tank Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 Don't know about all Garmins. I got my cable for my Garmin GPS12 at Galyans. A bit pricey at $45, it also has a built-in cigarette lighter power adapter for your car. Unfortunately, I ride a bicycle! ==============="If it feels good...do it"================ **(the other 9 out of 10 voices in my head say: "Don't do it.")** . Quote
+woodsters Posted August 2, 2003 Author Posted August 2, 2003 yeah I jsut saw the cigarette lighter/pc cable as well for the etrex. I beleive the cables that work for the etrex's work for the gecko 201 as well.. Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump Quote
+CYBret Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 Etrex and Gekos use the same cable ends, but other models use different ones. I think the Rhinos and GPS 72 (and others in that line) have interchangeable cables. You'll find some independent Garmin cable dealers on eBay. I don't know about their quality, but their prices look pretty good. Bret "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again." Mt. 13:44 Quote
martmann Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 As far as I know, there are two different Garmin PC cables the flat 4 contact cable for the eTrex (and others), and the round 4 pin (actually socket) cable for the GPS III, III+ V, Pilot, Street Pilot, etc. 2 contacts are the serial port, 2 contacts are for power, nither of the PC cables I own have power, but I think you can get cables that have both. REI carries them (and other sports/outdoors related stores might too), but the one by my house is always out of them. _________________________________________________________ If trees could scream, would we still cut them down? +Bilder Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 I know REI carries the cables and other accesories. Not sure, but I would think that Wally Mart would as well. Some good prices on Ebay like the others said as well. Once you have a cable you will wonder how you got along without it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have never been lost. +woodsters Posted August 2, 2003 Author Posted August 2, 2003 Well wee went to several places tonight. Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and The Sports Authority. None of them carried the data cable. They all had the cigarette lighter adaptor for power. Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump Quote
+woodsters Posted August 2, 2003 Author Posted August 2, 2003 Just found out there's an REI about 25 miles away and they have them on their website. Will try there possibly tomorrow. The data cable is $35 and the combo with the cigarette lighter is $50. Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump Quote
+supermoe Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 You might want to try Purple Open Projects located in Murphy Oregon, makes a wide range of custom cables for Garmin products at a reasonable price. Brian _As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump_ for that same 50 bucks you could get a cable that connects your PDA to your GPS and has a cigarette lighter...but it doesn't hook to your PC...that might push it to 60... +EScout Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 The link Supermoe gave sells plugs to make your own cable. About 4 years ago, I got the plug and made a computer and cig-power combo cable for my Garmin II for less than $5 in parts. Just fire up your soldering iron. That unit had an internal voltage regulator. Newer GPSrs require you to use a voltage regulator for using car 12v. Quote
+woodsters Posted August 3, 2003 Author Posted August 3, 2003 Might just order the pc/power cable from gpsgeek on ebay. Cost is is less than $16 plus $5 shipping. Saves about $30! Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump Quote
+Peppermill 6-Pack Posted August 3, 2003 Posted August 3, 2003 Will the data cable work on the cheaper yellow etrex's? I haven't read where they will, but I'm hoping. Quote

I'm not sure, but I thought they didn't, but the same cable that fits the geko 201'a fit the etrex models, just not sure on the yellow one. Maybe someone can answer that. +fivebushs Posted August 3, 2003 Posted August 3, 2003 I found a really nice cable on ebay for a only 12.50 - the quality apprears to be exceptional. Check out http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3036620346&category=4668 Also, take a look at sellers other items for other cables. Quote
+woodsters Posted August 3, 2003 Author Posted August 3, 2003 Went ahead and ordered the one from GPSgeek as others here have experience with them and the total price with shipping and all was only $21. less than half the price of buying one at REI. Also less than just the 12v power cord bought at any local store. Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump Quote
+Runaround Posted August 3, 2003 Posted August 3, 2003 You can't load maps to the yellow etrex but you can use the cable to load waypoints. Now where did I park my car??????? Quote
+Peppermill 6-Pack Posted August 9, 2003 Posted August 9, 2003 Thanks for the answer runaround! Quote
