+Search1128 Posted April 3, 2003 Posted April 3, 2003 I am getting ready to place my first cache. After finding about 30 other caches, I see that Ammo cans are the most popular choice for a container. I called the Army Navy Surplus and they asked me "what caliber?" I didn't know. What is the caliber that most use. I have seen two sizes the mojority of the time. A can that looks about maybe 12 in long, 8 in wide and about maybe 8 in deep. And another that is a skinny one about the same size but only about 4 in wide. What are the caliber of these boxes?? What do you all use?? Thanks. Search1128 Quote
+welch Posted April 3, 2003 Posted April 3, 2003 The two most popular are probly the 30cal. and the 50 cal. The 50 being the bigger of the two. A 50 cal. box looks something like this this. Quote
+Gloom Posted April 3, 2003 Posted April 3, 2003 the 10"x7"x3" ones are 30 caliber. The 11"x5.5"x7" ones are 50 caliber. HTH, Gloom ---- Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together. Quote

umc Posted April 3, 2003 Posted April 3, 2003 I like the .50 cal TALL ammo cans the best. The reason is because I like stocking my caches full of stuff and these allow me to do that better than the rest without being too large but they are still the largest of the ones mentioned. ______________________________________________________________________________________ So far so good, somewhat new owner of a second/new Garmin GPS V 20 plus finds so far with little to no problem. +briansnat Posted April 3, 2003 Posted April 3, 2003 I started using the .50 cal boxes, but I've since found that the .30 cal work equally well and are easier to hide. I still use both, but it depends on where I'm hiding them. "You can only protect your liberties in this world, by protecting the other man's freedom. Cracker. Posted April 7, 2003 Posted April 7, 2003 Check out www.colemans.com and click the Ammo Cans link under the gas mask and geiger counters on the right... They have lots of different sizes, and they give measurements for each type. Art www.yankeetoys.org www.BudBuilt.com http://www.ttora-ne.mainpage.net/ Quote
+Silver Horde Posted April 7, 2003 Posted April 7, 2003 We found a cache this w/e that was in a plastic ammo can. A very practical cache container. Ideal combination of tupperware and ammo can. +Brian - Team A.I. Posted April 7, 2003 Posted April 7, 2003 There's a cache I help maintain that has on of these as the actual cache container. It's large, to say the least. Brian Team A.I. Quote
The Buzzard's Posted April 7, 2003 Posted April 7, 2003 All ammo boxes are great to use. If you know where you want to place the cache, then you should let that help you decide on the container size. I personally like using the old style wooden ammo boxes, because they are very large. They are approx. 24"x16"x6" in size, but they also make hiding them much more complicated and you have to place everything in ziploc bags. I know that everyone who finds one enjoys seeing them. Mad-Mac Posted April 9, 2003 Posted April 9, 2003 I have a bunch of ammo box's. They are all '7.62mm link-ball tri'. But they are Canadian. Quote
+High Desert Fish Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 Any other item from surplus that works well? L Quote
HJS Posted April 13, 2003 Posted April 13, 2003 ..and please try to get the correct description. I was going for a cache where the owner stated that it was a 30mm ammo can. Those things are huge. Turns out the cache was in a .30 cal ammo can, a more manageable size. Quote
