Topozone

When i visited the Topozone website recently i noticed that the site now supports WGS84 Dataum. They are compleatly redesigning. their site. Seams like Topozone will now be a good alternative to Mapquest. This will be the biggest help for the more remote caches that would usually show a blank brown screen with mapquest.

Speaking of MapQuest, pretty soon you'll be able to find any kind of "map" that MapQuest provides on TopoZone, too. Some of them will be for subscribers only (i.e. not free) but they will include aerial photographs, topo maps, street maps, hillshaded topos, and combinations of those (like aerial photos with street maps annotated on top of them).

Topo Zone has improved, but has some drawbacks.

When I try and copy and paste the map it doesn't seem to work.

But this can be done with Maptech.Com. using online maps. You can copy and paste, the move the map, copy and paste again. Then move your pasted blocks to form a decent map when using landscape on the page format. Since I know what the local declination is this will make a doable map.

But I'll take National Geographics map any day of the week. On one of my caches I put a Cache Map East side

and West Map

lest they get lost in the boonies.

Oy! If you have trouble with TopoZone, please tell us, rather than posting in a private discussion board where we have to search for the info!

 

Tahosa, there's no reason why copying and pasting the TopoZone map shouldn't work. In fact, it should be much easier than it was before, because the entire map is all one image.

 

Send email to info@topozone.com and we'll help if that doesn't work for you.

I seldom use TopoZone, since I have National Geographic. I send my pupils who study Land Navigation to your site and others so they can find maps. You're getting free advertising from me.

And this is America and under the 1st. Amendment I can speak my peace either in private or public discussion boards PERIOD

I don't think Ed's objecting to your right to post where you want. He just would like you to notify Topozone directly when you have a problem. That way they can know of your problem right away and try to resolve it. They might not know otherwise if you only post your complaint on a private web page.

Alan - that's exactly my point. Tahosa, you're welcome to complain anywhere and any way you like, but if you don't complain to us you're much less likely to get your complaints addressed by us. It's very frustrating to run into people who have problems with TopoZone and take the time to tell all their friends about it, but don't bother to tell us so we can either fix the problem or explain what's going wrong.

 

I don't know whether I'd call it "free advertising" or a "free lunch" <g>, but if you'd like to get help getting copy and paste of our map images to work, just let US know directly. I believe National Geographic also expects you to keep their copyright messages on images you copy from their products.

Unfortunally Topozone only supports US maps. So yes, it's a great addition to the maps of MapQuest, but no it cannot replace it.

There are a lot more mapservers freely available on the web. CacheMaps supports over 20 at the moment. With CacheMaps you don't have to type in your coords anymore. Just select your cache and click a button.
