+headmj
<FLAME ON> Yep, that’s right I hate “Earth Day”. I “cache in – trash out” all the time and my Boy Scouts and I have picked up a lot more garbage than most so called environmentalists, but I still hate “Earth Day” This is one of those events that makes me angry. It was invented in the 60s while I was in college by a bunch of leftist-socialist (dare I say communist) kooks who used it as just one more way of assaulting a capitalist free society. If you read the drivel that is published you would assume that humanity was a scourge from outer space and that we should all just go out and kill ourselves to “preserve the planet”. They will be pleased to tell you that an owl or a fish should have greater rights than you do. Follow the money here. What’s really at work here is a bunch of liberal leftist elite who believe that they are smarter, better educated, and know much better than you do how you should live your life AND they should control ALL the resources so they are properly used. (If you think this sounds Marxist, go to the head of the class) Take a good close look at how they have already limited personal rights and are constantly attacking personal property rights via unconstitutional environmental laws. I will work with anybody who really has the best interest of PEOPLE at heart. These earth day kooks don’t qualify and I will do whatever I can to expose their real game plan and hypocrisy. My birthday is April 22nd. I will be 55 and I am going to proudly proclaim that I had 3 kids (not two, Oh My GOD how selfish!) and that I am here using and modify my environment. <FLAME OFF> Quote Link to comment
iryshe
You should probably try and redirect your energies to converting Earth Day to a concept you can embrace, instead of demonizing the idea because of your negative perception of the idea's creators. BassoonPilot
Well, a harsh rant like that will probably cause a few more people to lean towards the left. Liberals and conservatives are exactly alike ... each camp wants to control what everybody else does. Like you, I usually make it a habit to "trash out" whenever I'm hiking ... I'm not interested in "getting credit" for being responsible. But a lot of people like these group activities who would not otherwise engage in such behavior. Call it a herd-mentality if you like, but the end result is a lot of good has been accomplished. Happy Earthday-Birthday. Quote Link to comment

+The Leprechauns
My politics are slightly to the right of Attilla the Hun. I suppose that since I don't have a leftist agenda, I should cancel the Cache-in, Trash-out Event which I've organized for Earth Day. I'm sure that the 40-plus geocachers who are planning to attend would much rather pick up trash on their own than to have fun and a picnic event after an organized morning of cleaning up a park. Cache-in, Trash-out is "a concept I can embrace," to use Jeremy's words. I keep it in mind on every hike; at the very least, I don't add to the trash problem. Setting aside one day to practice this ethic on a formal basis is a fine idea to me, with no political implications. x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x I was formerly employed by the Department of Redundancy Department, but I don't work there anymore. +briansnat
I'm aware of the roots of Earth Day (I even remember the silly takeoff on the American flag with the peace sign and green stripes they created at the time). But today, it's become more of a "secular" day. It's a far cry from the demonstrations and "earth marches" of the early 70's and to most people is nothing more than a day to go out and pick up litter. Of course there is still an element of aging Hippies and teenage Hippie wannabe's out there using it to push their anti-capitalist agenda, but I don't think many people pay them much mind. Most people just want to spend the day picking up beer bottles and discarded tires and don't give a hoot about the reds. I agree that there are far too many LEftist eco-wacko's SO I like to declare myself a "Conservationist" Balancing the Needs of Man with the Needs of Nature. Given a Chance Nature Recovers... Take a Look at Pennsylvania today! 100 Years ago those Forests you see today were Gone over 75% of the state. The Noth Central Region had no trees, old photos show entire mountain ranges clear of everything. Those areas have all recovered, some better than Others, but they recovered... Everything needs to balance....otherwise you have complete Chaos....Eco-wackos don't like to hear about the killing of Deer or anything else...but how else can you maintain a Balance? +nincehelser
He's got some points... "Earth Day" is carrying a lot of political baggage. CacheMonkeez
I like HeadMJ's post. He brought his kids up to respect and conserve nature, not to abuse it. And he's right about the lefties in the environmentalist movement - a lot of their motivations were socialist: redistribution of wealth, abolition of private property, mother earth, blah blah blah. Quote Link to comment
+sbell111
I can also relate to HeadMJ. Its not really just an Earth day thing, this is just something that set him off. Too often people who would never consider taking steps to clean up the environment go out of their way to let everyone know that they are participating in a clean-up. If you don't particiapate, shame on you. Of course no one recognizes those people that trash out at every opportunity. It reminds me of those that only find religion on the major holidays. iryshe
Who cares. One less piece of trash on a trail is one less piece of trash on a trail. Caring about whether someone gets off on their own self righteousness is their problem, not yours. As for CITO day, it is meant as a way to indicate to the nay sayers that the geocaching community cares just as much about the park systems around the world as other folks. All too often the negative press tends to color the reality of things. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location Quote Link to comment
+Eric K
Sheesh people. How did CITO day turn into a political bashing. There are two things that you pretty much have no need to discuss in a public forum. Religion and Politics. Person A will have their beliefs and person B will have theirs and you won't change that. Just take CITO for what it is. A chance for geocaching to get some positive press and let non geocachers learn some of the better qualities of the sport/game. It would be a shame if new people come to the site and read messages screaming of political agendas to turn them away from the site. I have a dairy farmer buddy who had a third of his farm essentially condemned with no compensation because some eco-nazi decided it was a wet land. It was used by his family for 100 years. All that does is diminish what credibility you may have in what you post.
