Guest Lazyboy Posted June 25, 2001 Posted June 25, 2001 Since I travel the interstates every so often I thought it might be sort of nice if there were some easy rest stop type caches along the interstates. I place one myself recently on I-5 in Northern California. Just a couple of days after I placed it it was found. Of course it isn't easy to advertise such caches as travlers don't usually type in zip codes along their routes they are driving. It might be nice if we had a section for Interstate caches on this site. Anyway the cache I planted on I-5 is located here... http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=3310 Quote
Guest Markwell Posted June 25, 2001 Posted June 25, 2001 I realize it's taboo to mention it here, but there is another website that displays caches on maps that also include major interstates (although they don't show names of Interstates yet). Otherwise, it is possible to collect a list of geocaches within a certain integer criteria (say between N41° and N45° and between W085° and W087°, although it might take a while). Then you could also find the major shifts in directions and consider those "waypoints" on your route. Convert all of these to decimal coordinates (leave the integers alone and divide the rest by 60), making sure that you put the longitudes in negative for the western hemisphere and latitudes negative for the southern hemisphere. Finally, using an XY scatter graph of the route for one subset on the graph and the Geocaches in another subset (I also used "Geodashes" set up by GCScout as the green triangles), you can get something like this, which is a pretty darn good rendering of my upcoming trip from Chicago to Tennessee. A bit geeky, but I had to find something to fill my time between cache hunts! [This message has been edited by Markwell (edited 26 June 2001).] Quote
Guest Snowtrail Posted June 26, 2001 Posted June 26, 2001 Jeez and I thought I was bad for looking up zipcodes of known restroom stops! That's pretty kool though... Quote

If it's Buxley's great maps ( http://www.brillig.com/geocaching ) that you refer to, then I'm confused. Buxley's maps don't have highways on them. If they do, I'm missing how to display them. Buxley's maps are the best thing going, but they don't have everything! Quote
Guest Markwell Posted June 26, 2001 Posted June 26, 2001 d he said that it was a good idea and he'd look into it. (Ed?) Quote
