I want one of yours Markwell. When I get back to my office and its T1 connection, I am going to AudioGalaxy and see if I can't download every one of those. I actually have several of those pieces (that's what 'cultured' people call songs, is 'pieces" right?) on "Classical Thunder," one of my favorites.

Perhaps I can make my own.

Lest ye wonder - the FIRST song that came into my head when I saw this thread:

"Wherever I May Roam" - Metallica

I am only 30, after all. icon_biggrin.gif

Another one:

"I've Been Everywhere" - Johnny Cash (Bet you can't sing along with this one)

My first hunch was Willy Nelson (like "On the Road Again", part 2) but the real answer also made a lot of sense.

One of his other songs, "Turn the Page", might also fit in with geocaching.

Nick

Well I can't say "Shame on the Moon" to you can I. Whats suprising is who wrote this one.

I believe this could be a good idea for some caches come summer. I'll just have to make up some Irish Tapes and let them do the Jig down the Mountain, and from Glen to Glen. I believe the original cache is at the end of the rainbow guarded by some "Wee Folks"

The first song I can think of is

"Some people I know think that I'm crazy" by Billy Thorpe. For you yanks he's an Aussie.

Hounddog has named a group of caches after the song "Great Southern Land"

Too bed that guy sold out to Chevy... not that I have anything against chevies... really. But, "Like a Rock?" Please!

Right now my favorite music to geocache by is the Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring Soundtrack.

"The Bridge At Khazad-Dum" seems particularly appropriate... not in name but if you listened to it you would understand.

Then there was one by Nick Haywood that went something like "Near a stream, by a tree.." and went on about going "around and around". Which would seem apt? icon_biggrin.gif

I just gave a new listen to Tasmin Archer's "Sleeping Satellite" -- I'm pretty sure she's singing about US space policy, how we didn't go further than the moon... Pretty heady stuff.

Also, I think you're looking for Nick Heyward, the lead singer of Haircut 100. The lyrics aren't online (as far as I know) but it could be "Whistle Down the Wind" or "Kite" -- those are his big hits, according to allmusic.com .

Happy hunting,

Nick

Not sure about "Children of the Sun" but I will try to find out. Billy Thorpe spent some years in the US and I didn't keep up with his music during that time. I used to go to a dance hall during the 60's and watch him perform.

How about "Let the sun shine" from the musical Hair. Especially when it is pouring down and a new cache has just been listed.

You guys have done an excellent job collecting songs. You've already suggested the best ones, so in the spirit of thoroughly extending the genre, here's my humble offering...

500 Miles - Peter, Paul, and Mary

Going Mobile - The Who (although The Seeker is much more appropriate)

This Land Is Your Land - Woodie Guthrie

This thread inspired me to get working on a Geocaching album of songs I've collected. One that fits perfectly, but that hasn't been mentioned, is ZZ Top's "Doubleback":

"It's got me up and down,

I been lost and found,

Down in a deep dark hole.

Looks like my luck has changed,

I been rearranged

And I'm coming out on a roll.

Lookin' high and low, don't know where to go,

I got to double back, my friend.

The only way to find, what I left behind

I got to double back again, double back again."

How about America's, "Horse with no name"

After three days, I let the horse run free, cause the desert had turned to sea. There were plants and birds and rocks and things..

nes, hot joe and beans,

the sea, the desert heat

Chorus

Yeah we'll take the scenic routes

(and stop and smell the roses)

find out what it's all about

(with eyes wide open)

(with wide-eyed wonder)

(theres's nowhere else I'd rather be)

(chase the endless summer)

Paint the common things with mystery

and renovate our history

when we take the scenic routes

the cloud enfolded Trinity

unpacks the ancient tapestry

when we take the scenic routes

A camo-painted tupperware container certainly would fit in with "Paint the common things with mystery" I think. icon_wink.gif

My fifth or sixth favorite song from their 'The Wayward Bus' album:

The Magnetic Fields: Jeremy

I can't find a non-pay or non-pop-up site that will let you download it, so here's a sample of the lyrics:

Like a galapogos turtle we grow old and stay that way/

build a nest in the sand dunes, lay our eggs and walk away/

i was writing our dreams down, making maps of an unseen plane;/

and i noticed anomalies that you'd rather not see explained

Good song, good band. You should check them out.

And I've got something to help you understand

Something waiting there beneath the sand"

I picked up a geocaching music CD in Songs From the Woods the other day. hadn't listened to it yet but now I will very carefully. It's in a green case with gel pen writing on it. Anyone know who put it out there? I guess I could check the log, but I was wondering who originated the CD, it may have traveled.

Cache you later,

REM's - "Can't get there from here" comes to mind right off the bat for some strange reason... But, I highly recommend the OST to Cowboy Bebop anime series, something about that starting music and imagining yourself in a tricked out '76 Thunderbird... Then on the way home pop in the 2nd of the OST series. It just seemed to make it work. Just bring extra cigarettes...

Allow me to share with you these thoughts of Chris Squire, lead bassist/vocalist of YES.

"Hold Out Your Hand"

You can feel it coming with the morning light

And you know the feelings, gonna make you feel

Alright

Almost close enough to,

Hold out your hand

Span the distance,

Store resistance,

To attack is to retreat

All you've got to do is

Hold out your hand

For the treasures of the Universe are lying at your feet.

You can hide it, lose it, but it's always found.

You can laugh it off, but it always comes,

Back on you, so true.

True is true enough to

Hold out your hand.

Forward motion

Life promotion

To reverse is to repeat

All you've got to do is

Hold out your hand

For the treasures of the Universe are lying at your feet.

Hold out your hand

Span the distance

Store resistance

To attack is to retreat.

Almost close enough to

Hold out your hand

For the treasures of the Universe are lying at your feet.

(from the 1975 album 'Fish Out Of Water')

Umm, I don't like them, but Depeche Mode did a song called Pleasure, Little Treasure, and the Kottonmouth Kings have an album called Hidden Stash, and last, but not least, is THE song, by The Who, entitled

Cache Cache

Did you ever sleep in a bear pit

With apple cores and mice along

Did you ever lay on ice and grit

Or search for a place where the wind was gone

Did you ever tramp up endless hills

Past cosy homes with secret beds

Did you ever dream of a suicide pill

And wake up cold to the smell of bread

Well I have slept there badly twice

And shared my straw with scratchin mice

Although you'll find some deep brown hair

I'll tell you something for nothing

There ain't no bears in there (cache cache)

Not a single bear in there (cache cache)

Did you ever have to make a draw

For a hard wooden bench or a bed of stone

Did you ever jemmy a stable door

Or scare the horse to escape the snow

Did you ever invade a neat little yard

Wake up the children who hope for ghosts

Did you ever cause their dogs to bark

Their guests to curse their noisy hosts

Don't jump in expectin fun

Don't swagger in there with your elephant gun

Don't enter the cage with wavin chairs

Cos I'll tell you something for nothing

There ain't no bears in there (cache cache)

Not a single bear in there (cache cache)

Did you ever pass the police at work

And hope that they might take you in

Did you ever wonder why music hurts

When someone plays it aloof to sin

Did you ever believe that a smile could cure

A happy face keep you warm at night?

Were you ever fooled by laughters lure

Only to find that they laughed in spite?

Chorus: (as above)

Did you ever finally find a place

A soft warm bed in a room of flowers

And when you finally laid down your face

You found you slept for a hundred hours

A hundred hours.

There ain't no bears in there (cache cache)

OK. I hate to admit this in public, but I sing the "Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy," song from Ren and Stimpy while hiking for distance. It helps to keep my feet moving.
