Galileo...new European GPS is coming...

Interesting article in the August Wired magazine announcing (to me) the advent of a startling new Global Positioning System, known as Galileo, that would create a separate, yet add-on system (using the same frequencies) to that of the US. The EU system will consist of 30 sats, making a total of 54 sats that will allow us to get even greater accuracy than what we have now.

 

The EU just doesn't like the US being the only dog in town when it comes to defensive aspects of the GP System. The EU system is to be operational in 2008 and will include new "premium" features at additional charge.

 

I am not sure of the defensive issues, but geocaching accuracy may get so great we will have to start burying the caches in order to make them a challenge to find.

They've got the story a little wrong saying it will be on the same frequency as GPS. It will be "compatible" with GPS but that's not the same as being on the same frequency.

 

Similar with GLONASS, has been made to function in conjunction with GPS but different freq's again.

 

In either case increased accuracy will cost.
