Hey, it's not just for monday nights anymore!

There are ALWAYS 10-15 people there, and usually one or 2 of them are talking.

Not even just geocaching chat, either. In the last few days I've gotten some great recipes from Planet, learned alot about the space shuttle from Marky, and discussed the history of Teflon with Fouts. Quite a diverse bunch!

Can I ask why you prefer to sit there alone when there is already an active geocache chat that has been going on for the last year?

The chat runs on an IRC server. Much better then any web only based chat, since there are dedicated clients for every OS that offer many more features then could possibly be offered in a pure web chat. Clayjar hosts a

web based client for those occasional users who want the ease of the web chat, but more advanced users can use programs such as mIRC for windows, or Snak for Macs.

GeoVamp, are you ever going to come by the registration-not-required, long-standing fast, easy, and non-browser-based (unless you want to use the Java applet version) geocaching chat? At least drop by one of these Monday evenings for the Official Weekly Geocaching Chat.

You can either use *any* IRC client to connect to irc.freenode.net and join channel #Geocache, or you can use the java applet at http://gcchat.clayjar.com/ (And when I say *any*, I include text-mode and graphical IRC clients on Linux, things like Snak on MacOS, Trillian, mIRC, and any other client.)

And, instead of a few people dropping by, you can talk to any of 5-10 people that are usually there and talking most of the time, or upwards of 30, 40 maybe even 50 of your fellow geocachers during the official chats. Sometimes you might be talking to a newbie, or an ubercacher, or a programmer, or a geobabe. You might find yourself talking to an admin, or even the Big J himsef(on those rare occassions he stops working on the site long enough to chat). Heck, you might even get to talk to Majicman!

We aren’t tying to compete like it’s a foot race or something. The format we are using isn’t permanent it’s a temp. till we find a better one. I feel like you are thinking that we are trying to drag people away from your site. That just isn’t true, in a world as big as this one, I figure the more chats and web site the better. After all under the skin we are all Geo-brothers and sisters anyway, we can all work together like a world wide team.

I have had your site in my favorite for a long time and I’ve looked in a few times back when it was a Monday night chat. I when into it after I saw your post and chatted with Mopar. I think it’s a great site and I plan on visiting every day now that I know that there are people there all the time. Please don’t feel like we are trying to invade, I just want to coexist in a Geo-world. After all it’s about Geocaching and brotherhood anyway (sisterhood to) - right!

The only hesitation I voiced when ClayJar was setting up the site was that when people set up a chat room everyone shows up for the first 2 days. Then nothing.

ClayJar's solution to that was to set up a special once-a-week time for the chat and then leave it up 24/7 anyway. If you went in at 2am on Friday morning and no one was there, you could still tune in on Monday night and get someone.

I think having a secondary chat room will be good - when there are more than 50 or 60 people trying to chat at one time in ClayJar's room. I've never seen more than 39 so far even on Mondays.

Please don't think I'm offended or anything. I'm certainly not. I just wanted to point out that the "normal" chat has long ago reached critical mass. Due to the long history of the official chat and the large number of people who frequent it, just about any time you go there, *some* of us will be awake and chatting (except in the middle of the night, since most of us are in the US and the European and Australian cachers aren't always logged in).
