Team Covalt Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 Anyone out there using any solar chargers for their nimh batteries? Would appricate any recommendations. Thanks Garmin Vista Garmin Street Pilot and a partridge in a pear tree Quote
+Desert_Warrior Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 It is too easy to do. You need a few cells, and a hand full of components. Something like this was just hashed over on the ham radio forum. You might look there, and re-post your question. Lots of electronics types there. But once again, it is easy. Just depends on how many batteries, in parallel or series, and how many cells. Mike. Desert_Warrior (aka KD9KC). El Paso, Texas. Citizens of this land may own guns. +PDOP's Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 I bought one of the Brunton ones last fall but haven't had a chance to try it out yet (short days up here ) Here are a few links to check out Brunton Sundance Rael Goods Think Geek Quote
+nscaler Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 I can show you my charger at work on Monday. It is a Brunton. It will charge batteries and has 12v outlets and inlets. I got it at REI. Ya know, the one next to work? nscaler "Anyone not here, raise your hand!". Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 The Maha charger is a great charger. Building a solar input for it would be as simple as buying the jack at Radio Shack and ordering some solar cells. Ok so you have to soldier a little. This is one of my next projects. Just for kicks. None of the solar chargers I've seen focus on taking good care of your batteries. The maha also can be used with a car adapter. Wherever you go there you are. Quote
+Kfam Posted February 22, 2003 Posted February 22, 2003 You can get asolar charger from offroute and help geocaching.com too. Links from GC homepage to find lots of cool stuff. Quote

I actually contacted Maha about this and they said to put a 12 volt battery between the solar cell and the charger to protect the charger from the highly variable output from the solar cells alone.
