MORE ABOUT GROUNDSPEAK

Recommended Posts

I would like to know more about Groundspeak:

Photos: I would like to see photos of the Groundspeak HQ; the computer(s) that facilitate it; the people that work there, etc.

Stories: Who, what, where, when and why...etc.

Jeremy: Closes threads that do no pertain to geocaching or Vespa Scoter

Criminal: Opens threads that do not pertain to geocaching or Vespa Scooters

Also, "Criminals" would be more than one Criminal. Criminal's relates to things or ideas that are mine.

So all you've substantiated is that the "collective you" has a multiple personality disorder.

Come on you guys (and ladies). Hasn't anyone out there ever been to Groundspeak HQ? Somebody must know someone that has worked there (or maybe GPSaxophone's idea about a virtual cache there is more valid than I thought).

Hey...what about Jeremy? He claims to work there. He might even have a photo or two.

Come on Jeremy, fork 'em over. Let's see what kind of business you're running.

HQ? There is no HQ, Jeremy is really a 15 year old pimple face kid doing webpages html from the upstairs of his parents house. It is a big front. Like a man actually landed on the moon. Give me a break!

really? my dad used to have a vespa. is this the key to keeping any thread open?

and has anyone considered that it would be handy to have two radically different public personae?one for the company line and the other for whatever...

it doesn't matter if you get to camp at one or at six. dinner is still at six.

Once more, an anonymous person has sent me a photo of "Groundspeak HQ". I don't know whether to believe it or not. (If you look closely, it does appear that everyone entering the building is carrying a GPSr or a cache page.)

Hasn't anybody ever been there...can't SOMEONE show me a verified photo of Groundspeak? Is it possible that no one has ever returned?

Have done a little research and pin-pointed (thumb-nailed) the real Groundspeak HQ on the map below. Won't someone be brave enough to get a drive-by photo?

Interesting - I came up with a completely different address:

groundspeakmap.gif

<digs around online some more>

Ahhhh.... I just discovered that the address I found is a private mailbox, not a real honest-to-goodness physical address.

<digs around even more>

I *think* that I just came up with Jeremy's home address. I'm not going to post it (for obvious reasons), but perhaps that's the REAL physical location of the Groundspeak, Inc. HQ!

If so, I commend Jeremy on not wasting a bunch of money on office space and furniture, a phone system, etc. Any business that can be run out of the home should be run out of the home. The money saved can mean the difference between being in business and not being in business...

Ha. The bus drops me off for my walk down to the ferry one block away from that address in Seattle every day.

I'll have to bring my digital camera to work on Monday.

That picture shows half the office and looks about the same today, though I had to chop off the end unit to make room for the conference table to the left (off-camera).

All of our machines are now hosted off-site in a cabinet at InterNAP in Fisher Plaza, which itself is an amazing building to behold. We were fortunate enough to get in at the ground price when they moved in. We share the cabinet with KillerLink to split bandwidth and expenses. It is actually cheaper to lease our own cabinet at this point, as we use the same bandwidth at our office (and essentially become our own ISP). We're also in good company like Amazon.

Almost all of the web site machines have been moved over to cabinet-mount servers at this point, except for the web server. The database server is a 4U Quad processor machine that usually gets the most work of all the machines. Elias would have to go into the details since he handles the hardware pieces and security for the cabinet.

**(THE OFFICE)**

Our office is in the basement of a residence, which was once dark, concrete, and filled with cobwebs and mold. It was redesigned with some help from IKEA, and almost everything in the office was purchased on auction from failed dot-coms.

We're all tea drinkers (except me, so I'm a pot-a-day guy now), but we've got the traditional junk food, and our Jones Soda fridge is usually stocked with Snapple, bottled water, Coke, Mellow Yellow, and occasionally a few Red Hook beers. We hope one day to have a Slush Puppie machine.

Almost all our machines run Window$, except our mail server at InterNAP and an office box (formerly www.geocaching.com) which runs our Jukebox, Jabber server, newsgroup server, and print server. We also have a Mac Classic which we have been able to network but have yet to install a browser to work as a front-end for our jukebox.

Suprisingly enough there aren't too many cables lying around anymore. Each of us do have several computers under our desk, and for a while we had a few cabinet machines resting on conference chairs, but most of the equipment is now humming at Fisher Plaza.

That's a real good start, but I want to see some REAL PHOTOS of REAL OFFICES and REAL PEOPLE. (preferably taken by real geocachers)

I'm sure Bull Moose and maybe some other geocachers in the Seattle area can get, or have some original photos of HQ and personel. And don't forget stories to go with the pictures!

None of the addresses listed (even my own) is the location of Groundspeak HQ. It is at a private residence so we're not going to tell you either. icon_wink.gif

I'll try and take some pictures of the cabinet at InterNAP, but I'll have to cover up the one Mac we have up there so it doesn't get embarrassed.
