Guest Prime_Meridian
Anyone have any suggestions for preventing the "raiding of cache's"? I've placed three cache's over the course of my involvement in geocaching, and during the past week TWO of them have been raided... In one instance the container was completely removed from the site (private property with the owners permission) and in the other instance everything was taken from the container with a note being left behind stating "we are the cache bandits, we take everything and leave nothing". Any ideas as to whether or not cache's such as these should be replaced/restocked, or just chalk it up to those locations being "compromised" sites and best to hide cache's elsewhere? Guest Lightning1996YCJP
Geez, what a bummer! I feel bad for you. My first impression was to find other places to hide your caches, as it seems like those "bandits" would probably do it again. And I sure hope you don't have a few bad folks out there WITH a GPS who are actively looking to steal....they might be hard to get rid of. Good luck! Quote Link to comment
Guest gstrong1
It's unfortunate, but there will always be scumbags & scumbags can register & have access to all the information here just as easily as we that are loyal to the sport/activity.I mentioned this thought in a post about 2 months ago & was concerned we might end up with a few of these @#$&*^!s here & there. Not sure what the answer is, but it's something we might have to address. Any loser with a $100.00 GPS & a garbage attitude could raise havoc in an area. ------------------ Gary "Gimpy" Strong Rochester,NY Quote Link to comment
Guest martinp13
I know it's extreme and annoying, but you could make people email you to get the coordinates. Then you would know who is going after your cache. ------------------ > Martin Magellan 330 (1.56/WAAS enabled!) Don't have time to program and record your shows while geocaching? Get a TiVo ! Guest brokenwing
appened before in other places. I'm sorry hear it's now happening in your area. For now, I would not replace the cache. They WILL return. They seem to consider such repostings to be a personal affront. This is likely some teens craving attention. It's best not to encourage them. Thankfully, all these self-styled "bandits" are lazy scumbags that will soon get bored with this and figure it's not worth the effort when they don't get the attention they wanted. They'll soon go back to knocking over trash cans, torturing cats, and writing grafitti on bathroom walls to get their kicks. Best of luck, brokenwing ------------------ http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching [This message has been edited by brokenwing (edited 10 September 2001).] Quote Link to comment
Guest LoCache
I have an excellent way of identifying the "cache bandits", but if I post it here they will work around it. If you are interested in my personal view of this, email me directly. Geo Quote Link to comment
Guest arffer
Unfortunatly its too late, but probably the worse thing to do is post their activities on the forum. They are reading this you realize. Unless they have a personal grudge against you, they did it just to see us talk about it. Ignore them, don't give them the satisfaction of the post, and they will go away out of boredom. Quote Link to comment
Guest Irishmike3032
Idiots such as these live for attention. Probably because their parents hated and thus ignored them as children. My advise, do not give them the time of day. That will deny them the attention they crave so grately, and they WILL lose interest. Quote Link to comment

+Criminal
Two words: Offset Coordinates. The coordinates on the cache page can be for a trailhead or parking area, you find a street sign or post that contains the real cache coordinates. I like stamping them on a round steel washer and nailing it to a log. Then if someone wants your cache, they'll have to work for it. http://fp1.centurytel.net/Criminal_Page/ Quote Link to comment
+bigredmed
Leave a micro cache that is listed as a traditional. When they go to find it, they will be confused and will miss the cache that contains the coordinates to the real trad. There are little brass cylinders at Petco that are allegedly used as pet id's. Neither of my dogs has one and I have bought 2 (the one is used as a micro). They are about 3/4 of an inch long and can hang from steel cable around any tree limb you like. Put the coords inside this for the trad. "Half this game is ninety percent mental." Danny Ozark Quote Link to comment
