canadazuuk Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 Regarding the 'Where's In A Name?' virtual cache, and the corresponding logs/topics/photos that come out of it, which one of the following options are you most likely to agree with: Quote
Erawan Posted February 13, 2003 Posted February 13, 2003 I didn't have a choice on this one as 'none of the above' wasn't listed. Unlike most the caches identified, this one is pretty much for two people only. I guess the intent is to find someone that does the caching gig and see if you can get them to go to the coordinates. I can see something like this being made even worse. Something like: Go to this location, send me a picture of you at it and the coords on your GPS, and I will give you credit. By the way, it is 150 meters from the South Pole. At least most types of caches here have something to see or find. New and ingenious ideas for geocaching are good when most everyone has the opportunity to do it. There we go with the personal opinion. Thanks for the area to let me vent. Quote
IV_Warrior Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 Yeah, why is it that it seems most of these polls never give an option like "none of the above" or "it's just fine as is" I'm lost. I've gone to find myself. If I should happen to get back before I return, please ask me to wait. Quote
chloew Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 It's fine as it is. Logs and photos exist for all caches and I don't think this cache places any extra burden on the system. Extra postings in the forum should stay in the regional forums where they are appropriate. ° Fine as is Quote
Breaktrack Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 I post photos on lots of my cache logs, and although I'm a paying member, I do not expect to have to be one to upload photos. I've done the "What's in a name" cache. In the process I got to correspond with several individuals in Australia and it was a very neat experience. I think it is fine as is, but if it, and other locationless caches were placed in their own category, I'd have no problem with it. Take care all. "Trade up, trade even, or don't trade!!!" My philosophy of life. Quote
Bjorn74 Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 It seems to me that a Locationless Virtual cache like this is what gets in the way of some discussions around the boards. The point of the cache seemed good, to meet other people in differant parts of the world, but it took a turn toward spam when everyone and their cousins plastered the boards with find requests just to get a "find." I think that the "moratorium" on locationless caches will taper this off a little bit. Quote
david&diana Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 When we decided to do “Where’s In A Name?”, we calculated a latitude from our name and plotted it across the US looking for population centers along the way. We checked for nearby caches at various coordinates along the line. The goal was to find a geocacher who had found and placed caches in the area and did locationless caches. Going all the way across the country, we found someone that not only fit all our requirements but had assisted in logging “Where’s In A Name?” for another cacher. We sent him an email and received several pictures including a very cool shot showing a GPSr with an aircraft carrier in the background. A weekend without Geocaching is like a Monday. Quote
Web-ling Posted February 14, 2003 Posted February 14, 2003 When I did the Where's In A Name cache, I calculated the coordinates, then searched caches near the coords. I then directly contacted another cacher who had a lot of finds in the area. Quote
canadazuuk Posted February 15, 2003 Author Posted February 15, 2003 I was actually thinking about a separate poll regarding photo's in general. Photo's ARE good. FOR SURE. The thing is that photo's eat bandwidth and cost money, and I'd like to see more features added to the site, rather than all the member's dues going to bandwidth costs. If there were MORE members, then everyone would be carrying their fair share of the cost for EXTRA features. My opinion- pictures should become an EXTRA feature. canadazuuk Quote
bigredmed Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 The problem with this cache is that it gets used in bunches and those of us in the middle of the US get crops of requests for photos of some random corn field that matches your name. It gets to be a little tired, and most of us, including myself just ignore the requests after the first couple. This cache was the subject of some discussion on the Great Plains forum. I think that the pics for caches like this should be on a separate board, but I think that all LC's should be on a separate board like the benchmarks are.
