Why Geocaching wont work.

I see a small little problem arising with geocaching... Jeremy has done tons of work on the website to make it what it is. While at first this may not seem like a big deal, when Geocaching begins to build popularity problems happen. Jeremy has worked his butt off, so he considers himself entitled to his share of whatever revenue or recognition may come. So he of course begins covering all the bases.. trademarking the name, not letting anyone use waypoint data, etc, etc. Now given I would do the same thing likely, but what will end up happening is this... Little anarchists will get pissed off because of the commercialism and hoarding of what they believe to be data and intellectual property. So now what has to be remembered is that Geocaching ONLY WORKS BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE NICE. Jeremy hates to focus on the negative side, but one day in the not to distant future, you may go to check out a nearby cache and all you find is a piece of paper saying: "Free the caches -- http://GeoCachingSucks.com

(Oh wait, can't use that domain, GeoCaching is trademarked!) But what happens is a few people (doesnt have to be a whole lot) start stealing caches.. Or booby trapping them... Or posting caches that don't even exists... Next thing you know, nobody wants to hide them anymore and GeoCaching.com is dead. Or more likely somebody starts open a open source GeoCaching site. The point is that when you try to commericalize and make a buck off of something, some people dont like it. And because of the very nature of the sport, GeoCaching is very condusive to sabatoge by a small group of individuals. Of course what usually ends up happening is that messages such as the one you are reading get deleted and the people trying to make money try to supress dissenting voices. Hopefully (but not likely) Jeremy will choose the right path (ie, not the one he is on) and the sport will flourish, otherwise... oh well, it was fun while it lasted!

good grief stow, read what jeremy wrote in announcements, before you posted that letter. He isn't trying to get any revenue from this sport, he's trying to enjoy it like the rest of us do. I just wish the nitpicking would stop. Go out and PLANT a cache and let's PLAY

Another thing to remember is that Jeremy has left EVERY SINGLE NEGATIVE COMMENT on these message boards.

He could have easily deleted or edited the comments he didn't like or felt were unflattering. He has left the comments and responded too.

(Darn! Can't believe I let such an obvious TROLL attempt get to me. icon_smile.gif )

I think its interesting that "Stow" Just registered. Funny for someone who has enjoyed Geocaching. You would think that "Stow" might post under his/her original name. Unless like most of us, "Stow too feels he/she is full of it. Gee STOW thanks for the deep insight

Even used a library computer. How lame.

It'd be funny to register geocachingsucks.com - If that happens I believe the sport will have been validated as a popular sport. Unpopular sports would just be deserted.

Everyone's crazy.

Trademarks schmademarks. Maps schmaps. Lawyers schmoyers. Cache removals smash removals.

I just bought a new backpack yesterday. I'm leaving work early today to use it. Everyone else can stay here and throw or deflect stones, but I've got my GPS and some coordinates and I'm gonna go have myself some fun! Come along, if you want. It's a beautiful day outside.

That works for me.

Hang in there Jeremy. We ... the true participants in the game ... back what you've done 100%. Thank you for not being blown off by the likes of "Stow". Stow is just proof positve that inbreeding is still alive and well in the world. It is nice though that Stow is allowed in a library ... sometimes a little education can make people nicer.

Now stow,

We want to "stow" a cache at:

40 43 13 N

73 59 37 W

But MapBlast is off a little.

And we don't own a GPS just yet.

It will have stock certificates in it.

Something worth stowing

I think Geocaching will fail for the same reasons that Letterboxing will fail. Sure, Letterboxing has been around for 148 years, and appears to be as popular as ever, but I'm just certain it's going to collapse ANY DAY NOW.

Change it to degrees and minutes in decimals

N 40 43.216

W 73 59.616

Maybe that will help...

I fear there may be some truth to what you say. I found Geocaching only about a month ago and have been amazed at how well the honor system works. But then I suppose this goes to prove that most outdoor and technically oriented people are, as you say, "nice people". But I am afraid this pastime will become more popular, and will attract a few "not so nice" people. Probably the best way to protect against this is to make the searches more difficult. People who are butt-heads are also usually lazy.

FWIW,

Well, I'm still amazed at how good nearly every cache hunter I have known is about the sport and the honor system. I have talked up geocaching with my friends and coworkers, thinking I would hook them in instantly. Most of them smile politely and never mention the subject again. Bottom line: I don't think this is the sport for the masses, so by and large, it is only going to attract the enthusiastic, who will generally be the good folks that seem to be in it now. Sure, there will be some bad eggs, but I really think their numbers will be small.

The same has been said about eBay. "It will fail because people are generally dishonest." Yet anyone who has traded alot on eBay will say just the opposite. Yes there are some dishonest people on eBay and maybe here too, but I guess they are in the very small minority and will hardly hurt the activity.

What hurts geocaching more is wasting time on threads like these.

60 seconds I will never see again ...

I agree. Geocaching IS working.

There will always be people who look for the worst in anything. It seems we have a few here.
