Geocaching related anecdote - maybe true

Recommended Posts

This came in a "joke-of-the-day" mailing the other day, but I'd consider it more of an 'anecdote' with geocaching overtones...

I Spy

------

In a spy novel I had just read, the hero hid a letter in a particular statue in Washington, D.C. Since I was in that city at the time, on a whim I decided to see if the statue really contained the small niche the author had described.

To my great surprise, it did -- and a cellophane-wrapped letter was inside. After a moment's hesitation, I pulled out the letter, opened it, and burst into laughter.

An unidentified reader had penned, "Good book, wasn't it?"

Is that all the detail that was given? If the book title isn't given and no detail is given on what statue this is and where it is located (beyond a city), then I'd suspect it's apocryphal. A lack of specific details is a warning sign of an urban legend.

Remember, snopes (great site, ain't it?) address urban legends that turn out to be true as well as ones that are simply urban legend. Just because something isn't on there doesn't mean it's more or less likely to be true - it just hasn't beem spread around enough to get attention enough to be looked in to.
