Shark River Pirates Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 Nice 5 minute story with an explaination and interview with a cacher this morning. They did a good job explaining the whole process and describing the process of finding a cache. Funny thing was the guy they interviewed came up cacheless trying to find a cache in Central Park while on tv. More info is supposed to be on News Channel 4 but it wasn't up yet. ----------------------------------------- If you go into the huckleberry region back of Shark River you had better not scorn the story of the great pirate ship that sails without trouble in twelve inches of water, and has skeletons dangling at the mastheads. - Stephen Crane 1894 Quote
+brad.32 Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 If I was going to be on TV doing caching, I would look for a cache I had ALREADY found, but the TV people don't need to know that. Quote

That's what I did when I was asked to help out on a PBS spot. I had found the cache several months earlier and even went out to the cache while they were setting up the opening shots (I was being nice to the reporter-babe and knocking down spiderwebs for her). And yet SOMETHING had to go wrong! The guy setting up the spot kept wanting more shots of us walking....we ended up walking pretty far past the point where I had gone off trail and then got under some nasty tree cover. All in all, a cache that earlier the same day had taken me under 10 minutes to find ended up taking us better than a half hour. Oh well, they'll clean it up in editing, I'm sure. Shark River Pirates Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 They didn't mention his name but there were a few people shown in the report and some were walking on the beach. Not sure if they were actual geocachers or just muggles posing as geocachers and it looked like everyone had Magellens so who knows. I was hoping whoever was in the report would post. There was no specific mention of Geocaching.com he just said "Visit one of the geocaching websites". ----------------------------------------- If you go into the huckleberry region back of Shark River you had better not scorn the story of the great pirate ship that sails without trouble in twelve inches of water, and has skeletons dangling at the mastheads. - Stephen Crane 1894 Quote
+The Frantic Cachers Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 I just saw the report on the website. I don't think it gave geocaching much justice. Even the reporters didn't make it seem interesting at all. Oh well.... Quote
BassoonPilot Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 I think the guy featured was a Magellan marketing rep, especially since the piece was really only a promo for magellan. Quote
+Dave_W6DPS Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 The link is on this page, in the box for "Feedroom Video", called "High-Tech Hide-And-Seek". I tried to copy the shorcut into a link here, but it is a javascript call and didn't co-operate.... I thought it was pretty positive. It would have been better if they had found the cache! But, all in all, it seemed pretty favorable coverage to me. Dave_W6DPS My two cents worth, refunds available on request. (US funds only) Quote
+Perfect Tommy Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 Actually looks like the "geocacher" (more likely a Magellan sales rep) tried to find three: In the Ramble; TONY; and Swamp Gas. Would have been a real black eye for the RASH if they had found any of the other "treasures" encountered by 'cachers in the vicinity of the Swamp Gas cache. Most of the other shots of 'cachers in action looks like canned Magellan promo footage. ____________________________________________ I used to be disgusted, now I'm just amused Quote

+TotemLake Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 It was obviously pro-Magellan probably to make up for the foopahs of the Magellan treasure hunts (noticed the chest?). I expect to see a flood of newbies in the next week or so from this. WNBC is a pretty wide broadcast. Cheers! TL Quote
