SpongeRob
I'm sure somone has tried this but I couldnt find anything specific to it. Hopefully I can get some useful input. I'm going to be traveling from Illinois down to Key West, FL over the following week. I would like to hit any/all caches that are right of the I-65, I-24 or I-75 going down to Florida. I've done some searches like "I-65" and found a few, however I know from my own experience in Illinois there are quite a few "Travler" caches always near the expressway. The problem is without going mile by mile and doing a lot of reasearch I don't see an easy way to find caches on my way down. Has anyone else been able to plan a trip and see caches all along the way? -- SpongeRob rwmech@keenpeople.com www.keenpeople.com WPWU826 Cache'n Retrievers Quote Link to comment
Renegade Knight
Not yet... What I've done is get an area of waypoints and leave the GPS on while I drive. As I get close I can see the waypoints on the GPS and decide if I can or want to stop. ===================== Wherever you go there you are. Quote Link to comment
Cache Hunter D
This isn't much help, but better than nothing . . . Using zip code 33043 for a search, with 75 mile radius it get's all the caches in the Keys (And some you need a boat to reach.) Can't help much with the rest of it though. Quote Link to comment
SpongeRob
The keys search was easy I did that by lat/lon. The expressway searchs are much more difficult. I was afraid I was going to find out there was no good way to do it. -- SpongeRob rwmech@keenpeople.com www.keenpeople.com WPWU826 Cache'n Retrievers Quote Link to comment
Huntnlady
Thats an easy one. Look on the cache map for the state, zoom in and pan along your route. Then identify the caches and look them up. If you have any questions about them that aren't answered by the posts, email the cache owner about them. Its the only way to go! Deer laugh when they hear my name! http://www.geocities.com/ihunts Quote Link to comment
WestyCrew
Can I say public library. We have found that every small town has one with internet availability. Every few days we find one and download for the next few days. Quote Link to comment
Dave_W6DPS
If you have the patience, you can use the state map for look for caches along a route. You have to pan along and identify every few miles, so it takes a while--but it does work. We have a local site in SOCal where we have started sharing info about caches along a route or in an area. Maybe if there is a site for your area it has some info. Good luck! Dave_W6DPS My two cents worth, refunds available on request. (US funds only) Quote Link to comment
Markwell
You know, SpongeRob - someone should put that in an FAQ. Don't let the sarcastic tone fool the innocent bystanders. I would hope my local compatriot knows I'm kidding. Seriously, though - options are listed in the link. Markwell Chicago Geocaching Quote Link to comment
SpongeRob
Smoked by Markwell again! I've really got to try and spend 3-4 days looking for this stuff before I post. Seriously, thanks for the feedback. I decided to go the route of the pocket queries. I considered that ones that were potential stops had to be difficulty 2 or below. So I built a query for Regular caches or Virtual with a difficulty of 2 or below in both terrain and overall difficulty. I then take the queries and throw them into mapsource and follow my route down. Was able to select only the ones that were visually near the road. I'm going to then take all of them (regardless of location) and throw them on my PDA. Should be able to give me all the hints and such on my way down. Thanks for the feedback! -- SpongeRob rwmech@keenpeople.com www.keenpeople.com WPWU826 Cache'n Retrievers Quote Link to comment
sbell111
As I was reading this thread, I remembered that Markwell had posted a really good way in a thread about two months ago. I'm glad he included it in his FAQ, because I couldn't remember the method and I'll need it in about a month. Quote Link to comment
Markwell
You're welcome. BTW - the Streets and Trips method is really cool. You set the route, and set the distance from the route you're willing to go (3 miles, 2 miles, etc.). REALLY neat. Markwell Chicago Geocaching Quote Link to comment
