No pictures from my adventure getting stuck trying to find Whitefish Falls Cache. I highly recommend not trying to seek a cache in a blizzard. I ended up getting my Tahoe buried in the snow and had to snowshoe about 40 minutes until I found someone with a truck to pull me out. Cell phone service in the UP can be quite unreliable at times :( Still haven't been back to find the cache either. Maybe I'll wait until this winter and try it again!

Wow....no post since 2007. I am sure some has gotten stuck since then.

Mud Road Mash#10

Here with Gossamer2. We started down the road from the Point Abino side in the Jeep. It was a bit narrow at first and we were hoping it would open up a bit. Got 40 meters in and decided to abort the mission as the road was not getting better. Just as I was about to but it into reveres the right side of the Jeep drops about two feet! Not good! I tried putting it into 4Lo and engaging the lockers but I was stuck. The ice over the rut on the right side of the road had given way.

We walked back to the intersection and over to the house on the corner. Fortunately the owner, Kevin if I remember correctly, wasn't sleeping and invited us in to warm up and call a tow truck. We found one that was willing to try to get us out. He managed to reverse in but couldn't get enough traction to pull me out.

Back to the house. Kevin managed to get a hold of his friend who had a bigger truck and was willing to get us out. He wasn't able to back in far enough as the small trees were too close together. Kevin offered to put us up for the night so we could try to find someone else in the morning.

Next day we called a tow company that had the equipment and were crazy enough to try to get me out. When the driver arrived he told us if we could prune the tree branches he would back right in and try to lift me up while pulling. Back to the house. Asked Kevin if we could borrow a saw. He comes out with a small chain saw. Sweet!

Kevin made short work of all the branches that were protruding into the road allowance and the truck was able to back in. A little too far back. His back wheel broke through the ice. Now the tow truck was stuck. He called in another truck to pull him out.

While waiting for the other truck he tried to get the Jeep out of the hole. He managed to do it but the stress broke the ice and now he was in deeper as well. Turns out it wasn't just a rut but what was left of a mud hole.

When the other tuck arrived it was too small to pull him out. So they called for a third truck. When that one arrived it was going to pull out the first truck with the second smaller one in front as an anchor. They managed to free the first truck and all three pulled me out of the now much larger hole.

They said it was the first time it took three truck to get someone out. I feel so special now. :D

After all that Gossamer2 and I hiked in to find the cache. We weren't going to let this be a DNF after all that!

I wish I took pictures of the one time we got stuck, but here's the story:

October 29, 2006 by nymphnsatyr (1047 found)

We are calling this one our "$125 cache." Here's why. We tried to approach the cache from the wrong side of the river, and ended up heading down a very steep road that turned out to be someone's driveway. We couldn't get back out! We were stuck. The Satyr tried pushing us up the hill, I tried various angles, and nothing worked. The gentleman who lived on the property came out with his two long-haired chihuahuas (cute!). Although he was obviously very annoyed with us, he assisted us in calling a tow truck and had a great conversation with the Satyr about maps. After about an hour the tow truck with two gruff and rough characters driving came to pull us back onto the road... $125 later we were off to the cache!! We didn't even skip a beat... just kept on going! Once we were in the right place, we found the cache easily... a little too easily. After we signed the log we cammoed it a little better and went off to find more caches!

(Log ends here)

This was when I owned my horrible little Honda Accord that I hated. Nothing against Honda Accords, this particular car just wasn't meant for the mountains of Colorado.

Anyhoo, I realize that I forgot to mention on that log that the first tow truck that came to get us got stuck, and they had to call a second one!! Quite a driveway!

I've gotten stuck a number of times. If you're not getting stuck, you're not going far enough into the woods. All of these Jeeps posted claiming to never get stuck then show them in dry areas or on rocks - duh, go find some bottomless mud!

Got high centered on a berm just this week. You can't tell from the pic, but it's really steep behind the truck at the top of a powerline road.

I pulled this guy out last year:

photo-15.jpg

Only to get a call from him a few months later where he got stuck again. I came and pulled him out, then decided that we'd get to the cache in my truck. Then I got stuck, we shoveled it clear and I drove out. Then we got the cache, headed back and I got stuck again  Shoveled out and drove out again.

Here's the log:

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...84-5ee20e92b56f

Jrou111 asked, "Did you get the cache yet?"

Me: "No, it's up there about .23 tenths of a mile, on the OTHER side of the mudpit."

Jrou111: "Let's go get it!"

Me: "Ummmm.... (we just got UNSTUCK)... OK" (thinking it wasn't gonna be a good idea)

I said, while climbing in his BEAST, "Now I can see what a REAL 4WD can do!"

Me again: "So, have you ever gotten this thing stuck before?"

Jrou111: "Nope. Came close with artican before, but it made it out."

Well, He has NOW! TWICE! Going AND coming!

That was SOME mudhole!

BTW, they named a cache after us and placed it at the location where we got stuck:

I've yet to get this one stuck, although it is 14,000lbs:

I wondered if that would ever show up here! Jrou111, I never had the occasion to meet you when I was in the Bham area. But I remember laughing so hard when this appeared on the local forum. Hopefully you have taught the owner of that stuck Jeep some off roading skills by now! Hopefully I will get to meet ya when im back in the area someday.

No, don't think he's learned his lesson yet! I nearly convinced him to go after my 5/5 the other night after the AGA dinner.

Yeah man, when you're back in town get in touch with me.
