Hi folks I'm new at this so I don't understand the rules. Do I just sign a log book there at the site and, on the web site? My son and I off to our first hunt. We are very excited to get started. My wife down in Florida turned us on to this I love the out doors so this is right my ally. Thank you folks very much this is a great idea icon_confused.gif

That's it exactly.

You sign the paper logbook at the cache, and the online one so everyone else gets to see it.

Occasionally unethical people might try to log a find online w/o actually finding the cache, so the paper log verifies the find.

BTW, there is a "Getting Started" forum that you may want to spend some time perusing. A lot of good tops come from there and the FAQ.

Yes. When you get to the geocache, there will be a few things to do. First, you will want to sign into the logbook on site (you may enjoy reading others' logs too). Secondly, most caches will have an assortment of trinkets and baubles for you to peruse. If you see something that you like, you can take it and place something of your own in the geocache of equal or higher value. For example I had a stress toy and I left it in exchange for a decorative potato scrubber once.

When you get home, use the website to log your find to keep an online tally of everything you have done and to let others know how the hunt went (without giving too much away unless you encrypt it).

That's about it. You may want to read more in the "Getting Started" forum if you have any other questions. There are also good guides at http://www.geocaching.com/about/ for any other questions you might have.

EDIT: Darn, Mark, quicker on the draw! icon_smile.gif

Also, carry a small "log book" with you and write down what you took and what you left. Nothing is more frustrating than getting home, logging on to log your find, and forgetting what you traded. Especially easy to do if you've visited several caches that day.

You don't have to do anything.

Its just life, enjoy it. Why make it complicated? I have had people sign the log, but not enter it into the web site.

For some people its not about the competition, its about getting out and hiking, who cares about actually finding the cache?

There are some caches that don't have a log book, but you can email the owner with certain information to prove you were there. These are usually virtuals, but some physical caches may lack log books, too. Also, some virtuals ask you to post coordinates and/or pix - like the one in Vancouver's Stanley Park, where you have to find one of a series of landmarks.
