The technology exists. . .

Maybe I should call this topic "a great idea for an invention:"

So far all of the homing type of devices I have ever seen emit a signal, and the location of the device requires two directional receivers to locate the transmitter via triangulation, but bear with me here:

I have a cell phone, that when I am using it with an earpiece, I can set it to 'silent' so the phone makes no noise, and automatically answers when a call comes in, and I can start talking. The phone can receive and auto-answer calls without anyone knowing that a call is coming in. Without even me knowing, if the earpiece isn't plugged in securly :-/ The phone has its own unique phone number, so that people can call me, the cell towers find the phone - wherever it is, and I can communicate from just about anywhere I happen to be.

Pagers are now available in alpha-numeric, so the technology exists to transmit digital data over the airwaves.

GPS's can tell you exaclty where you are, where you have been, how far you've traveled, your maximum speed to get there, etc.

Tie these technologies all together, and what do you have?

A device that you could call it's unique number, and it would report where it was. What could you do with such a thing? Well, you could require your kids to wear it (lock it on 'em) before they leave the house on Saturday night. If you got worried, you could call it, and it would tell you exactly where she was, where she had been, how fast they had been driving, etc. I guess it would be kind of like a lo-jack (or whatever they call that stolen car locater deal on the high-end cars) only for people.

A suspicous wife could hide it in her husband's car and find out where he went.

A cheating wife could hide it in her husband's car and know when he was on his way home.

You could put it on your pet's collar if it likes to wander.

It could be used for people sentenced to 'house arrest'.

Does such a device exist already?

Big brother is here. . .

Well, they are adding the GPS technology to cell phones, mainly for 911 purposes, though. I do like your idea though, especially about locking it to my toddler, just in case. I bet alot of people would be willing to pay an extra $10 a month tacked onto their cell or pager bill. Maybe billed in units like a pager. Like 25 positon checks a month, after that they are .25 cents apiece. The bracelet could have a panic button. Log in to a website, and get position displayed on a map, or call 800 number and have it read out to you over phone. Wow, ok JSB, whos gonna finance us on this? icon_biggrin.gif

Basically already exists especially with emergency vehicle tracking, transport systems and taxi's etc. Car rental firms are reportedly using similar technology for all sorts of things.

Just remember for such a gadget to be effective, it needs to have access to the satellites.

Once you are inside a building or not outside in the open, it looses its location signal and thus is useless....

Here's another company:

Kind of pricey:

Haven't worked through all the text and stuff yet, but this is cool:

Here's a paranoid article on GPS usage:

This is cool. GPS data built into a RIM 2 way pager.

This is the way the spy, Aldrich Ames, was tracked. The FBI installed a GPS/Cell phone combo under his car. They tracked him, and when he was about to make a drop, they nabbed him. I think I have also heard that similiar devices are used on persons under house arrest.
