Guest cleenjeep
Thats a good question... hmm.. I would love to find a big cache full of MRE's, I love them! I may be crazy, maybe its the tobasco, but I like MRE's when I am camping, backpacking, kayaking, sometimes just for the heck of it! Guest Mike_Teague
I love em too.. vegetable crackers, jalapeno cheese spread, and a cherry beverage base to drink... how can that be beat!?!??! Quote Link to comment
Guest jeremy
Can animals smell the food through the hard outer coating of an MRE? I ask because I purchased a carton of the things last year. Don't want a cougar eating the jalapeno spread. Jeremy Quote Link to comment
Guest bob_renner
Look at it this way. Drug smugglers try all different ways to disguise the smell of drugs by coverings and such. However, drug sniffing dogs still manage to find the stuff. Bears are supposed to have a sense of smell many times greater than that of a dog. I wouldn't doubt that a bear can smell an MRE even through the wrapping. There might also be traces of the food on the outside of the packaging from the processing. The next question is whether or not the bear (or cougar) would want to waste its time for an MRE when it can dig up insects and grubs to eat instead? Guest Mike_Teague
I wouldnt bet on it, but I suspect nothing can smell thru them... every item inside is sealed like nothing i've ever seen sealed before, already in it's own pack, and then all that is inside the big pouch which is filled with some sort of alternate atmosphere (i think all the non-vacuum-sealed parts are filled with nitrogen) if they can seal em good enough to keep oxygen from getting in, how could any "smell" molecules get out?? on the other hand maybe the bear would smell YOUR smell on the outside of the MRE and look for that... who knows...
