Multiple hides at one time

This is probably an old subject but I want to post it for opinons anyhow.

What do you all think about a cacher placing a large number of caches in the period of a few days?

I am well aware that it is not against the rules but I have a feeling, that I can't really tie down, that there is something not quite in the spirit of the thing to place six or more caches, that are not part of a themed set, at the same time.

This is not a 'pop' at anyone in particular and I am sure there are times when doing something of this nature is just fine... As I said, this is a feeling that is just at the back of my mind and I am not really sure why it bothers me.....

As long as they are well thought out and not "drive and dumps", I don't see a problem at all. Perhaps the person had been planning them for a while and finally had a few days where he could get out there and place them.

I'm guilty of this very thing recently. I just placed 6 new caches in a short period of time. I had the containers packed and ready to go and I had discovered a few nice spots, so out the caches went. I don't see the issue.

Well now. Good question.

Here is the deal. Placing a cache seem to kill off a good chunk of perfectly usable geocache seeking time. Combining all your accumulated placments into an enjoyable day seems like a good use of time. I've gone on scouting missions that take all day before and placed nothing. Even so I found several spots to place caches which I came back later and did.

There are fewer than 500 caches in my entire state. I'd have no problems if someone went on a cache-placing spree.

Maybe in an already cache-dense environment, it may be a bit much.

Are these all good quality caches? Or are they just a container and logbook with junk thrown in for good measure?

I wasn't aware of guidelines against placing multiple non-themed caches in an area.

How many caches can one person maintain? Depends on the cacher. We don't need a rule for things like this.

As I said. this is NOT a pop at any particular person, so, there is no question about the quality of the caches. However, you raise a very good point: don't ye just feel so let down when you get to a cache to find a box of McJunk chucked deep under a thorn bush?

I did say in the original post that I am aware that there is no rule against this but again, you raise a good point when you ask 'How many caches can one person maintain'.....

Thankx to all for the replies so far.....

There are people who won't even maintain 1 cache, while others do a good job taking care of 50. It depends on how much time a person has, and how much time the are willing to to take away from looking for caches to tend their own.

Personally I try not to worry about what other people are doing. I just worry about myself. I have no problems with people placing caches. The more the merrier. Some may be lame, but so what. The next one could be a gem.

It is very convenient to buy containers in bulk (okay, sets of 3 or 6); to buy swag in bulk; and to paint and label the containers at the same time. That's what we've done.

While caching or driving around or hiking, new possible cache locations may present themselves. We take notes and then will put several out around the same time.

Around here (southern california), there are some geocachers who focus on hides and put out a new cache at least once a month. Others seem to place in spurts.

To each his own!

Maybe they placed them at separate times and didn't log them in until later. It's possible they have limited access to a computer, and couldn't log them in as they were placed. Of course, maybe they threw them out of a moving car into the bushes, too.

Let me know when you are going to Siberia, I have friends there that can help you out. Out of your wallet, credit cards, jewelry....

I see what you're talking about Bug and Snake and I think its very VERY annoying. I would not have any problem if they were quality caches that were enjoyable experiences to find but I've seen too many "flippant micros" if you willl thrown about and its not pretty. Especially when that cacher starts throwing them around in your area like litter. It really bugs me!

I rather like the idea, if they are good quality caches.

I've started writing down notes when I go exploring for

scouting Hash trails, or other activities with coords when

possible, whenever I run into an interesting place to put a cache.

But when I finally break free of my chores and place a cache,

it'll be more convenient to dedicate the whole day to placing

and registering tham all at one.

Also, by placing a bunch it gives people who can't leave work

on a moment's notice some hope of logging a First To Find.

I have to do it vicariously by calling my wife and letting her

and the kids go for me... I would have stayed home that day had I known!
