+geomaineiacs Posted July 14, 2003 Posted July 14, 2003 How do most people do it? Plot cache on topo map, find a known point on the map, measure distance and trend to cache, and then use a compass in the field from that point? How is distance measured in the field? Just curious. Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted July 14, 2003 Posted July 14, 2003 Plot it on a topo, plug in the coordinate on Lostoutdoors.com for an arial map. Etc. Quote
+woodsters Posted July 14, 2003 Posted July 14, 2003 Not sure as to the part about measuring the distance, but the military training I received on map reading, trained ou to read the topomap. The topo map tells you were ridges are, how to read the land (hills), landmarks and etc. The online topo maps like at topozone pinpoints the coordinates on the map. As renegade stated about the aerials, that just helps you even more. I believe it's a lot more search than with a GPS for the most part, but it can be done. Yes you do use a compass. We were taught more or less the map reading thing for "Call for fire" (calling for support or artillery). Brian As long as you're going to think anyway, think big. -Donald Trump Quote
Dinoprophet Posted July 14, 2003 Posted July 14, 2003 I found this one without a GPS, just to see if I could do it with a 1/1 cache. I punched in the coordinates on lostoutdoors.com, noted where it was in relation to the hill and the river (the blue dot just below the "R" in "RIVER"), and I pretty much walked right to it. Well the mountain was so beautiful that this guy built a mall and a pizza shack Yeah he built an ugly city because he wanted the mountain to love him back -- Dar Williams Quote
Clint&Jo Posted July 14, 2003 Posted July 14, 2003 LOL. Back in the olden days people were, in fact, able to navigate by compass and map. Sheesh, are we really slaves to our devices? Quote
