I love the idea, I could trade up my wife.

Hold on a sec... just how old are you? I thought that we only recently learned that you were a teenager? Not?

He lives in a country called "North Vancouver", not far fetched that he might have prearranged marriages there.

Dunno if this is what is meant but I am considering a 'no kids' comment as my final location is to be the centre of a traffic island!
I've seen caches in similar locations use the "Not Recommended for Kids" attribute.

kids-no.gif

That attribute is only used for kids about 5 and under. Kids above that age do not fit into the category, it depends on what the CO is trying to convey.

Apparently a majority think that when someone says adult they mean sexual effectively making the phrasing Adult Cache vulgar, even if that is not so.

Responsible Grownups Cache (that felt immature and stupid just thinking it) anyone? Listed as a PMOC.

Knives, water proof matches, non lubricated latex condoms (as a survival tool they are good for more than protection from STDs) flint & steel, etc etc.

Okay a few things, knives are not good even for adults because you can reach in and cut yourself. Swiss army knives are MUCH better idea. (I'm never without one). Matches are a good idea, however no lighters, those things can break and get lighter fluid everywhere. Condoms... Err, no. How about not using a condom you found in a box in the woods?

If you reach in blindly then it is your fault. Swiss army knives made after 91 are junk, I don't know why and I was thinking something more like 1-5 dollar lock blades. I never said a thing about lighters and most of them use a compressed gas not a liquid fuel in normal atmospheric preasure, doesn't make it a better idea tho, wile it wont blow up the cache it may blow the lid off.

Condoms, I said they good for more than wearing. If it is not lubricated and is in the wrapper then you better believe I would use it for it's other uses if needed. Carry water, trap construction, fuel.

The condoms will likely degrade rapidly in a cache where it gets really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter. I wouldn't depend on a condom in a cache to carry water anymore than I depend on a condom stored in a wallet to protect me from STI's and pregnancy. THey just don't do well in the heat.

Offtopic: Where do you have the information from that the attribute is for kids about 5 and under?

We had many discussions on the topic in local geocaching forums throughout the years and there has been no common opinion about the age.

There are many caches that carry the icon "kid-friendly" even though they are not recommended for say 3 year old children, bur rather say for those that are at least eight or at least ten years old.

True, but they'd make a great turkey baster cover.

Water is only 1 aspect, a middle aged condom that is sticking to itself and an old age crumbling dusted one still has uses.

When it comes down to "Wouldn't want to count on" aspects. I wouldn't want to count on a disposable lighter so I have waterproof matches in my pack too and I wouldn't want to count on them either so I have flint and steel, and a fire piston and the supplies to create several methods of friction ignition. Yet if the lighter fails, it isn't junk, it has alternate uses, as do the matches, F&S and the supplies I would use for a friction fire. But this is coming from the guy who has P.E.T. bricks reclaimed from water bottles in his storage unit just in case.

As I was writing this I stated asking myself why I'm bothering to point all of this out? So to go back on topic. There is nothing "adult" about a condom except how you use it. The same hold true with matches and knives.

I allow my 7 year old to have matches and a lighter in his B.O.B. in his room, but not a knife. I'll get to the knife in a moment.

To many people are appalled by the idea and would never allow their children because they can't be bothered to tech the children safety and demand it. These are the same people who wont hesitate to give the kid a magnifying glass. What hypocrisy. Teach safety and demand it is why he is not allowed a knife. I'm teaching, I'm demanding, he isn't demonstrating the knowledge and willingness I demand. My daughter age 12 on the other hand, earned the right to a survival pack sans a rifle at his age. The girl is smart and responsible and for some strange reason she wont open a geocache. Well it isn't strange, it is the parents responsibility to make sure the child isn't exposed to something objectionable in a cache be it a knife or condom or satanist tract.

It isn't my job to make sure anyone's kids are safe but mine outside of direct involvement so that they can be lax in their duty and it isn't anyone's job to force that onto me.

Adults should take responsibility and teach it to their children so that we can have swag for different age ranges with minimal complaint.

Unfortunately I'm constrained by an agreement to not put specific harmless items in a cache.

Are these the same adults who are supposed to supervise minors on the forums?

We're supposed to supervise the minors here?

No, we are not. The minors who post here are supposed to be supervised by their, and I quote the Terms of Use, "parent or legal guardian." They are not supposed to be supervised by just any random adult who happens to be around.

Haha! Thanks for summing up, what I assume, many people on this thread has been thinking. Personally, I don't see why one must even place such material in a cache to make it "fun" or "worth while". You can easily create a more fun, worth while experience by placing clean items in a cache. My first cache I found had an awsome swiss arm knife inside, which I took. I'd have rather found that than a Penthouse magazine. I can't understand why one would even feel the need to place those particular items in a cache to begin with.

<A HREF="http://k2.kirtland.cc.mi.us/~salesj/geocache.html" TARGET=_blank>http://k2.kirtland.cc.mi.us/~salesj/geocache.html</A>

Not that I think porn should be in caches, but many would argue that knives are a much more harmful prize for a child. Just sayin'.

I've done an "adults only" geocache hunt and easter egg hunt on my private property. I never listed it on the site for obvious reasons and it was by invitation only.

By adults only, my definition was twofold. (1) There were items in the containers that only adults should have such as booze, sexy underwear, knives, certain unmentionable toys and other items of adult interest. (2) The terrain wasn't kid friendly either. Even if it was, the adults were in a race and kids could have gotten hurt.

The adults had a great time and only a few injuries were reported. lol. In any case, that's the only type of hunt that would be appropriate only if it's on your own property and it's a private event. It's not something that I'd ever want to see on the general geocaching site.

I'm surprised Nude Cacher hasn't chimed in on this thread. (ducks, runs, Grins!)

I only clicked on this thread because of my having come across the Nudecacher indirectly. I was so impressed I decided to honor him.

Even if this is an adult themed cache of sorts, you can see from the Firecachers log on 5/2/09 that it was still handled responsibly with a minor.

I do teach my students about Geocaching, but if this cache comes up I specifically ask them not to go find this cache and post any pictures until they clear 18.

Hey, if you want to find ADULT PORN, go to the ADULT BOOKSTORE !!!

If your upset that you find worthless trinkets in a cache that you sought..

GET A LIFE !!!

When I visit a cache, I leave behind useually at least 2 items, one for the kids, and then something practical..

I am notorius for leaving compasses behind..

I buy them up at Walmart in the clearance rack for about 3 bucks a piece..

Then I ALWAYS leave something for the children..

It might be a Snoopy Bobber, or some McDonalds Toy.. Or something...

I collect Marbles, I have an ubundance of near worthless cat eyes and now I know what to do with them...

Adult Caches you say ?

Find some other place to get your ROCKS OFF !!!

This is exactly my way of thinking. I leave a toy or two for the kids and something more practical, like an emergency poncho or something of that nature. I leave charms that, as an adult, I'd want to collect. But, I don't see a need for 'adult only' caches when people can just add items like that to all caches as well as toys.

Ok, just realized how old this topic is..haha. And, how many times someone has bumped it through the years. The thread that never dies?

Call me an old poop, but I find that most of the time when people talk about things as being 'adult' or 'mature' they are really refering to things that I find childish and immature. Being a mature adult is knowing how to put a cap on your baser instincts, not parading them around in public.

Thank you Jeremy for taking what I think of as being a mature stand on this issue.

That's what I was thinking. When you mean "adult" as in XXX I think of college boys, not grown ups. From what little I've seen so far, a lot of geocaching is "grown up". My kids certainly don't want to go after a dime sized micro at the end of a 5 mile hike. They want the giant box of goofy toys about 100 feet off a nice playground.

There's a thread around here on upgrading swag items. Suggestions for grown up trinkets are things like flashlights, handwipes, packets of tissues, carabiner clips, handmade trinkets to dangle off your keychain...The problem is that cheap trinkets tend to be toys, so toys are what we find.

I just want to reply so I can have my name on an "original" thread

No, I don't believe there should be "adult" theme caches ("adult" in the way that most people define the term, meaning: explicit content not suitable for chldren under the age of 18) (all those children over the age of 18 go right ahead!)

I do think it is nice to have swag for grown-ups in caches. We try to leave a combination of kid stuff and grown-up stuff like rope or hand sanitizer, etc.

One thing I would like to see more of (and maybe this is just an issue in my area) is puzzle caches that are solvable by kids. There are a whole lot of really clever brain teasers that only adults can figure out, but not a lot of easy, fun puzzles for kids.

I guess I know what my next hide is going to be... :D

I had to have my gf's 4 year old nephew help me with this one. It's bee so long since I said any of the nursery rhymes. Unfortunately, I only know the "adult" versions of them.

ache, and you are not into that, Leave it alone. You already know that it contains items of no interest to you. There is no reason for you to mess with someones cache.

What if the person whose cache you plundered decides to plunder someone elses "normal" cache as revenge?

Once again, trashing someones cache is NOT cool!

Joey

I have at various times (very infrequently) come across knives, live amminiution and alcohol. When I replaced the cache these items were no longer present. I suspect most cachers would do the same with pornography. There's one other huge issue that hasn't been discussed yet; our sport depends on the good will of landowners. I'm quite certain that if imappropriate items were to somehow become appropriate for the game, there would be a severe reduction in the lands available to hide caches.

Hmm... I know the first 3 lines to a lot of nursery rhymes, but that's it. I blame the song "Throw It out the Window", which I often use when I lead campfire singing. The verses go like this:

Jack and Jill went up the hill

To fetch a pail of water

Jack fell down and broke his crown

And threw it out the window

Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard

To get her poor dog a bone

When she got there the cupboard was bare

She threw it out the window

And so on. Each verse, I let one of the kids choose the next nursery rhyme. I'm prepared for just about any nursery rhyme they call out, but I only need to know the first 3 lines, so that's usually all I know.

High, low! Low, high!

Even if it was clearly marked 18+ or NOT for kids, there is always a chance some kids are going to find the container while playing in the woods. I don't want kids finding alcohol/weapons/porn ect. It isn't right and it isn't safe.

And why would I want someone's used porn, that is just gross. (and the internet is chock full of free porn):anibad:

jus' waitin' for captain clorox to come to the rescue. :D

Captain Clorox did not have clear orders from Signal the Frog to take his customary swift action in this thread. Instead, Signal has sent me, the mild-mannered moderator in a labcoat. I post to remind everyone to abide by our forum guidelines, which frown upon personal attacks and not respecting the views of others. I also reiterate the geocache listing guidelines quoted above. Adult materials are not allowed in geocaches listed on this site.

Interesting, is "Adult material" defined by community standards? I think some people would be surprised at the adult material I've found in many caches here in Germany. Actually there is one very good cache close to me that is a theme cache where you can only trade adult theme items. Of course, this is a society where you can walk into just about any corner shop and see magazines/newspapers with nudity on the front cover.

Yes, you've got it right. In fact the wording that geocaching.com uses in its guidelines isn't adult material but illicit material. Illicit is defined as not sanctioned by custom or law.

For the record. I still agree with my 2006 self.
