Whether you're a neocacher or old enough to remember when baked beans were in every cache, we'd be delighted if you would join your fellow cachers in the weekly scheduled geochats. We have them every Monday at 8:30pm Central US time. (1:30am UTC, if you want to do the math for your local timezone.)

There are several ways of connecting. The easiest is to go to: http://gcchat.clayjar.com/ with a Java-capable web browser. Alternately, you can use any IRC program to connect to irc.openprojects.net and go to #geocache once you're online.

(Logs of the weekly scheduled chats are available at http://gcchat.clayjar.com/logs/.)

I dropped in at 6:19 PST but no one home. I never have seen anyone there, I could be doing something wrong?

RSG,

If you drop in and see no one there, I think there's something wrong.

There are about five people that are pretty much in the chatroom permanently, due to a broadband connection of some sort...

Not that those folks ever respond, but you should see some names in the corner at the very least.

What url are you using?

Jamie,

I clicked on the link above tonight, which is the same as I have used before. I am on a Mac using I.E. 5.

When I go to that URL, after I enter a nickname and connect it is says that Channel: 0 people.

I type in a message, hit enter and nothing shows up.

Well, with that you've exhausted my resources. I have no idea.

One of these other bright folks.. um, well, folks that purchased Macs... should be able to help you.

I heard on CNET radio yesterday that MAC users were smarter and better educated than the national average.

That must explain why I've never owned one.

(if you listen quietly you'll hear ClayJar softly grumbling about yet another off-topic post in his chat thread)

red shoes.. I don't know if it has do with browsers but I use netscape and lately when I enter the room it takes a long time to actually connect. Have you ever waited awhile and let it sit... mine probably takes a minute or two to log in the occupants and show the chat...then it all scrolls on by and your in. I dunno... just a thought.

How about something liek Monday and Friday night, or Monday, Friday, and Wednesday? Or Monday and Thursday? Or something more than what there is now.

As someone here's tagline says, half the people you meet are below average. I think the national breakdown for the CNET survey went something like this, from lowest to highest:

Junk emailers

Telemarketers

Sensational talk show participants

Mass media personalities

Mass media audience

Career politicians

Mac Users

your typical ivory tower academics

PC Users

Geocachers

Is this chat about geocaching like the IRC chats?

Does it require some other programs?

I would like to join in, if that is OK

Just thought I would post something in this topic to get it back on the first page of the General Forum so more people see it and are reminded that tonight is chat night! See you then!

A cacher named Clayjar, 'tis said

got a useful idea in his head

go to pound-geocache

at eight and a half

and pretend it's a virtual trailhead

Yeah, okay, the last line needs some work. I'm open to suggestions.

Well, other than the Mac and PC users have been reversed, looks good to me! (and yes, I have used both!) :-)

But I'll try again this evening. We'll see if I can get the chat thing to actually work.

Technically, it is IRC.

If you're on Windows, you can just go to http://gcchat.clayjar.com/ to log on simply and easily.

Everyone is welcome.

(If you want to use any old IRC client, it's #Geocache on the irc.openprojects.net IRC network.)

Well, tonite's chat was rather mystery solving, to say the least! icon_biggrin.gif

Ever notice everybody is willing to give THEIR 2 cents worth but only offer a penny for YOUR thoughts?

In reply to the person who suggested more frequent chats...

There are some of us (ahem) who are in there almost all the time. You are welcome to join us anytime. As a matter of fact, over the last few weeks we've had an incredible number of people, both on Monday chat nights and at other times.

So come join us!

Becky
