Question about potential cache w/ mix CDs

I had an idea for a cache, and I couldn't find an existing thread that was applicable.

What I want to do is create a cache with a bunch of burned mix cds, holding a wide variety of music. Then I would encourage other people to leave their own mixes behind as they took some music, you get my drift. I was just wondering if this kind of thing was considered a no-no because of copyright issues, etc.

I'm still new to geocaching, I realize that it's probably not a new idea, but have people done this and has it worked? Or is it something that shouldn't be done?

Personally I think it would be a good idea, but there are music piracy issues here. Funny how a few years ago, few had problems with making and distributing mixed cassettes, but now that people have CD burners, the music industry is having a canary. Probably because they make a heck of a lot more money from CDs, than they ever did from tapes.

Criminal, you should be flogged for pointing out that thread.

If it is a theme cache, you may have to walk a fine line to avoid the privacy issue with this type of cache. You could be held responsible if someone violates copyrights and sticks the cd in there.

I had a feeling the community would be opposed to any kind of piracy, but I'm glad I asked anyway. I guess you could limit it to store-bought music, but any cds that I'd want to get rid of, I wouldn't want to inflict upon other people - best to just burn them and purge the world of such horrors.

I thought of doing something copyright-free... I know enough local artists that would gladly let me put their music in a can in the woods (where it probably belongs anyway, hehe) but I doubt anyone else would want to hear it, and not too many people would be able to replenish the cache in kind.

Thanks for the quick replies though!

I've seen a couple of music cd themed caches. They were actually pretty cool. If you open it up to all music cds and post that you won't allow bootleg cds, you should be ok.

As for cds you want to get rid of not being worth trading, remember that one persons trash is anothers treasure.

In one such cache, I left a country cd that I was given at an industry party. I had no interest in it, but it was snagged by the next visitor. I bet someone would want your old Rick Springfield cd.

The cache which originated that everlasting thread is called Wired! and belongs to me icon_biggrin.gif I do have a bunch of music and movies in there, but they're all taken from the public domain. If you dig a bit on the net, you'll find a wealth of such media freely available. It takes a little work to compile it but it kinda makes the charm and the value of the cache in my mind.

All good ideas... after some reconsidering I think I could probably stock it with previously purchased music without ever shedding a tear (although the Rick Springfield album would *sniff* hurt too much to part with icon_wink.gif).

I might open it up a bit to include musical items as well: kazoos, whistles, guitar strings, midi cords, the singing frog from Looney Tunes, etc.

The trombone would be a little trickier...

The proper way to Markwell...

Trademark Items......

Copies CD's/Software Etc..., and at the end of that conversation, Jeremy came down with a decision.

It seems a decision has already been made from Geocaching's side.

Recordings are NOT public domain, and I would guess that showing up at a Rolling Stone's concert handing out free copies of their greatest hits would still get you busted in a heartbeat.

I've got a cache waiting in the wings for final approval from land managers that will use pre-purchased CDs with the explicit instructions that Mix CDs will be removed.

Here is a great CD cache, with an even better cache page.
