Congrats! The pocket queries are great. Check out www.clayjar.com for a great program (Watcher) that helps manage the GPX files you get in your PQ's. If you choose to get them in GPX versus LOC, you will have the entire cache page, and the last five logs for each cache. Plus tons of filters to customize your caching.

In my day, downloads to the PDA were free. Yup, there is no such thing as a free lunch anymore. I can't figure out a reasonable work around so I may have to buy in.

I might have to join in on the crazyest and try it out for a year. I am beginning to see the value of member only caches. I am working on one cache that I know will be plunder eventually so hopefully someone will appreciate it before it happens.

I have to find my checkbook still to sign up. I will not touch paypal, I hate them dispise them and know to many people that got ripped off through Paypal, and paypal would not do anything. Atleast through banks I can get my money back if there is a discrepency. Not with paypal. Not saying Geocaching will rip me off because I highly doubt they will. But I won't sign up for just 1 purchase, so back to hunting my checkbook. Wish I marked a waypoint for it.

I bought a GPS. Now I get lost with style.

I originally signe dup to keep the board here alive, seen too many good sites faulter because of expense.

The PQ has turned out to be a BIG added bonus. Besides the DL's to my GPS, I get the files for my Sony Clie so if it is in the GPS, I have all the descriptions and finds in the PDA as well. Having akll that info without having to print things out makes for much easier finds and allows for that occasional spontaneous search.

Baloo you are correct and I can speak about this from experience. I've been contimplating joining myself for this same reason. But i have a question. Being that I don't have a PDA or even a cable for my GPS, can I still use pocket queries? And if so, what would be the benefit for me? What other benefits besides that and of course supporting comes with it?

Woodsters,

You could still get the benefit of having a personalized list of caches in your area. This list would be available off-line, and not subject to ISP outages. You could get the PQs in MobiPocket format, and download the Mobi PC Reader. This would give you most of the information, and the most recent logs. If you want to map out the PQs you caould also do that with ExpertGPS (advanced EasyGPS)

But even to simply the site, and keep it improving, the 30 bucks a year is worth it for all the fun you get out of it.

As for me, I use the PQs with EasyGPS, and GPXView for my PocketPC. Greatest thing since sliced bread icon_wink.gif

Ok. So in other words, without the other techy gadgets, I could download the pocket queries to EasyGPS and they would be in a spreadsheet format. So then I could easily print out the spreadsheet and have many caches listed on each page rather than one cache to each page? Am I understanding this right?

Slightly OT.

Woodster and others.

I know I border on...OK..I am a geek, however you might want to consider investing in the data cable for whatever GPS you have, provided it has an input.

They can be had for as low as $10 for common ones and average around $20.

I'm not trying to spend your maney here, but there are a lot of things that this opens up for ya.

Now the PDA thing, unless you have another use or are unbelieveably serious about GC, I wouldn't get it just for this.

Just a thought.

Great thing with the pocket queries is the ability to view and print cache pages offline.

Just download Clayjars Watcher program and you can view your pockets offline. You can filter, sort, view the last 5 posts per cache, print the page, and other neat stuff I have not discovered yet.

Worth every penny and helps keep the server load down on the mian site.

Very neat program. Thanks Clayjar!!

Woodsters, I have to second the cable thing. You can download a pocket query into your GPSr containing hundreds of caches in the time it takes to manually enter the waypoint name of one cache. It would take hours to enter them all manually. Another cool thing is that the gpx files automatically assign a geocache icon to the waypoint for found, and not found caches. (If your reciever supports the cache icons.)

Don't have the cable..Have the Gecko 201. I may one day get the cable, but can not rely on that. The only advantage I would see for me right now if I understood it right, is that I could print the caches up in spreadsheet format out of EasyGPS. That would be better thanone page per cache. If it will do that. I have no intentions of getting a PDA.

I'm not sure if anyone answered that directly yet or not, but want to be sure.

Why should pocket queries be the determining factor in paying for a premium membership? If you use the website to find caches is great. If you use the website to advertise your own caches, then don't you think you should show a little support and help with the maintenance of the website. Just my opinion.

You can do that now, without a premium membership. Load the free program "EasyGPS", then select the caches you want to download on the search page. (Check the little boxes to the right.) The resulting file can be opened by easygps, but you will only get the waypoint name, coordinates, and cache name. To get the actual cache, you need PQ's and a program like Watcher. It helps because you can speedily print out the cache pages (albiet not in spreadsheet format) without even connecting to the site. I don't know of any program that allows the printing of whole cache descriptions in spreadsheet format, all on one page. If all you need are the coordinates and the cache name, easygps is the way to go.

And yes, it would still be nice to contribute to the site. icon_smile.gif

Woodster,

Hate to help out the others in ganging up on ya, but maybe you will take this better from someone who carries the Wood family name as well.

Your life will be much better if you got a pc cable for your GPSr. All that time you are wasting on manual entry would be better spent posting on the boards or out on the trails searching for the elusive happy meal toy.

Trust a fellow Wood. Get the cable. icon_smile.gif

Don't get me wrong...I'm not looking for an excuse to become a paid member. The determing factor doesn't lie upon what I've been asking about. I'm asking because I want to know if being the member has the added benefit. I may one day buy a cable for my Gecko, but right now, my capabilities of when I can cache does not support that for me right now. We are leaving for vacation tomorrow and of course a cable would help me for that. But that is only once and no guarantee of how much I will get to cache. I know of one cache that I'm going after definitely. Thanks Bloen for the info on the EasyGPS thing. That will definitely help in that way. As far as the benefit of looking at the cache pages offline does not help me any. We only have the PC and I can just as easily log on.

I only manually enter specific caches before going out after them. It takes a whole 5 minutes at the most to do. So I can not see the benefit there.

Like I said, the pocket queries thing is not the determing factor, I just wanted to see how it was going to help me. I also wanted to see what other things you get besides that as well...

I too joined.and I know this will not be a popular stance, but I wish everyone had to be a member to get co-ords. This way I won't get jokers that go to my cache ( or anyone elses) and leave pornographic logs and pics.

Maybe if you had to make some kind of monetary commitment, stupid kids using their parent's GPS's would not find my cache!

There is the option of making your cache a members only cache and that is starting to look more apealing to me.

Not all kids are stupid, they could just as easily use their parent's account in addition to their GPS. It's a family friendly activity. Kids are supposed to go caching. If you want to limit the finds to more die hard cacher types, make them difficult to find in a short period of time. If the hunt requires a long attention span, you will get less visits from those looking for a quick thrill. They will pass it over in favor of one that requires less effort.

To us, paying a $30.00 fee voluntarily, was the least we could do to try and give back something for the unlimited fun and great experiences that we've had while being a part of the geocaching community.

For less than the price of going out to dinner, maybe we can help keep this site available for all of us to enjoy!

Found my first "members only" cache today! icon_smile.gif I have to admit, it was a lot harder than the 1.5 rating suggested. It was overcast and had fairly heavy tree cover so the gpsr was dancing. The cache was very well maintained and full of new, good items that I would be proud of placing! Took a couple of things and left a couple of new items still in the package. NO McJUNK in this cache!!! icon_smile.gificon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks GOTGPS! It was the best so far! icon_cool.gif

I think the quality of member only cashes is bound to be higher than tranditional caches. (This opinion is based on only one find but...) no plunderers can log on for free and ruin it! icon_mad.gif

Woohoo! I read this tread a week ago and decided that when i got the money i'd become a premium member - and just did! I wont use pocket queries much, but i really do use this site alot and wanted to contribute to help maintain the wonderful service they providfe me. icon_smile.gif

But I also clicked on a "member only" cache, and it says i still need to subscribe, i did activate it, even make a PQ, maybe it'll fix itself overnight or something icon_smile.gif

On another note, it it ok to take non-members to member only caches, or do i have to do them on my own? Thx

wannafly, sure you'll be able to take them but as far as them logging the find it would be impossible.

I agree. Supporting the site alone is worth it. But then to have pocket queries is like an infomerical saying, " But wait there's more". I don't know how I lived without them now that I have them.
