Perhaps what you are referring to as 'virtual' is the same thing that others have called 'personal' TBs. These are TBs that are never traded away. The owner merely logs the bug into and out of each cache he finds. These are allowed.

There are ettiquette rules that most people follow, but it's my understanding that once you pay for your travel bug number you can pretty much do anything you want with it.

Also, if you post of photo of your travel bug, be sure the number on the tag is not ledgible. It is possible to "virtually steal" a travel bug and "virtually place" it into another cache.
