Guest bk11 Posted January 6, 2002 Posted January 6, 2002 Derek Powazek, author of Design for Community, lists geocaching.com as one of Seven sites doing it right. quote:Geocaching has created a community, even though all the action takes place offline. The site merely enables the game: geeks place caches of loot out in the world somewhere, and then post the GPS coordinates to the site. The site facilitates getting those coordinates to players nearby, and the fun ensues. Then, after participants have found the cache, the come back to the site to talk all about it. (Forgive me if this has been covered already, I don't see it on the press page. The article is from 12/18/2001, I've been meaning to post it.) Very cool! Brenna Bump On A Log Quote
Guest jonser Posted January 6, 2002 Posted January 6, 2002 Hey Derek Powazek this is to inform you I am not a geek. Bonehead. Sincerely Jonser Quote
Guest Choberiba Posted January 6, 2002 Posted January 6, 2002 Jonser: Hey Derek Powazek this is to inform you I am not a geek. "Geek" is no longer considered derogatory. It's slang for technologically literate. Quote

Hmm... but if I were in accounting, I wouldn't be condemned to go to all the... nice... people to clean the viruses and such from their computers. (I'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt the first time... and the second time... and maybe the seventh time, but eventually, it gets a little old.) On the other hand, when the PC's all nice and cleaned up, I have to check to be sure it's got Internet connectivity... Quote

Guest bluespreacher Posted January 9, 2002 Posted January 9, 2002 I'm pretty new to all this, but I can happily say that this site is really put together just right. I've been 'online' since just before the web browser became popular. Everyone was soooo excited about what a community building force the internet would be. I suppose we all know how things actually turned out. Except for those few islands of commercial-free community. I'm not sure who is caring for this site, although I've heard mention of a mysterious 'Jeremy'. I just want to voice my appreciation for the work and resources that go into this very vigorous site. Thanks! Bluespreacher [This message has been edited by bluespreacher (edited 09 January 2002).] Quote
