You might want to post a source for that statistic. As far as I can tell, almost everything you wrote is wrong. First, the tick is most prevalent in the southeast; its range does not extend to the southwest. Second, no way do 5% of the bites result in a fatality. The mortality rate for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is about 5%, as is that of ehrliciosis, another tick-borne infection. But the infection rate per bite is quite small; most ticks are not infected.
