Guest glenn95630 Posted December 20, 2001 Posted December 20, 2001 I know commercial caches have been a topic before, but I'd like to hear opinions on a slightly different wrinkle. What if the national coffeehouse chain, Barstucks, posted a thread that said, 'We think geocaching is cool, but January can get too cold. Show your GPS unit at your local Barstucks and get a free cup of coffee in January.' Would you be bothered by this? Glenn95630 Quote
Guest navdog Posted December 20, 2001 Posted December 20, 2001 Not at all, would be a great way to warm up after hunting a few caches. Love those Chai lattes. But seriously, I don't mind the idea of commercial "cachism" as long as it is not done on this website. Quote

Guest infosponge Posted December 20, 2001 Posted December 20, 2001 Yeah, it would bother me a lot. They have horrible coffee. Maybe if it was somebody besides Charbucks who didn't over-roast the coffee beans. Quote

Guest worldtraveler Posted December 20, 2001 Posted December 20, 2001 I already have to wade through far too many pop up ads and spam emails when on the net. Please don't allow advertisers to encroach (post a thread) on these forums! ------------------ Worldtraveler Quote

Now go back the the game boards and let the adults talk. I have nothing against Starbucks. Personally, I find them a welcome port in a storm when I'm traveling, but I'm not into the bizarre culture they try to promote. As for commercial caches, I'm skeptical but I'll keep an open mind. I recall a snack company putting out commercial caches last summer and it met with resistance. If it's done tastefully with an understanding of what we are doing, I wouldn't object to it on a strictly theoretical basis. -E ------------------ N35°32.981 W98°34.631 Quote
Guest skaymus Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 ed to survive arson in Tennessee [ ], and wanted to offer a free drink to GPS owners (fat chance - maybe .50 off any purchase of 7 dollars or more i.e. one coffee), I would not mind. However, I would like to see it advertised via more conventional methods. They can certainly afford a radio or television ad, or even a circular. Our discussion forums are for us, not for free advertising space. If the forum started allowing these shameless promotions in here, wouldn't we all get that sick/sad feeling we've all had at one time or another when a "job interview" or "friendly dinner" turned into a 'but its not AMWAY . . .' sales plea? P.S. if you want to make millions and join my downline please email me at dirtyshamelessselloutcommercialbastid.sux Believe it or not I had a teacher in college (it was a pair of them actually) using theier influence over young mallable minds to try to sell the students into some phone card pyramid garbage. I am bombarded with commercialism at every turn everyday. Please keep one of my last refuges safe. Thank you Skaymus Quote

Guest infosponge Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 On a related topic, how would you feel if a Chamber of Commerce or visitor's bureau sponsored caches in a particular area. By "sponsored" I mean that they paid for the cache and its initial contents and some of the trinkets would probably be of a local flavor (post cards, souvenirs, etc.). Would that be a bad thing or would it be ok? Quote
Guest glenn95630 Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 Re: Chamber of Commerce or visitor's bureau sponsored caches. Sounds OK to me. Quote
Guest madphatboy2 Posted January 2, 2002 Posted January 2, 2002 I think that is a great idea. I agree that the hunt is what I am after. But if there is something good in the cache, I like that too. If it is sponsored by above mentioned it may mean higher end "prizes". HMM. . .the possibilities! Quote

If it makes you feel any better, one Prof I had tried to convince the class to drop acid when they had a chance. Berkeley, sheesh. Quote
