Guest HIltonfamily Posted December 28, 2001 Posted December 28, 2001 Met other cachers and found some really great cache sites as well as a wonderful place to stay with the kids...(Embassy suites..with discount $69 a nite). Anyway, we live just outside Buffalo, NY. We came home to over 5 feet of snow Parts of WNY have over 80". I believe that this would make geocaching right difficult So thought that since I won't be doing a lot of caching for a while I would post some "the snow is so deep that..." comments...... The snow's so deep we have to tether the kids to the front porch.... The snow's so deep that we've found a fishing pole works the best to "let the pomeranian out". We cast her out and reel her in. She's gotten quite good at snow swimming. The snow's so deep you need a GPS to help you find your way home from the end of the street. The snow's so deep that Eversure convinced his sister that she could jump off our second story deck to the snow below (brothers are something! ) The snow's so deep that my sister who is up from NC took pictures of snowmobilers at the gas station. During the winter don't they always ride up the middle of the road and just pull in?? The snow's so deep That my world is muffled from extraneous sounds. That the kids delight in making caves and in time doing so! That it sparkels likes diamonds when you take a break and look at it. That it is truely beautiful outside.... Happy New Year!!! We generally get hit by Lake Erie's Lake effect also, but this year it seems Buffalo is stealing all the snow. I spent yesterday scouting locations for new caches... it was actually the first day this season the Ski-Resorts opened up. I'm thinking of planting one around there. Quote

The trip was planned to celebrate son's 12th birthday...in lue of a party.... Ended being the best thing we could have done.... Caching was great other than frozen toes from Butterfly girl who decided to look really trendy....... Sister flew in from NC and had to land in Rochester as the airport was closed in Buffalo so we picked her up on the way home. Right now there has been no new snow since 3 yesterday. But just wait until the wind picks up....4-5 feet of snow plus gusts equals..........A WNY maze....... BTW...when we cache and meet fellow cachers I open the bag and let them pick. Saw an article in the paper where they called it our first major snowfall!! Talk about trying to brainwash people, MAJOR?snowfall, give me a break. Trouble is, we get so little from year to year that people forget how to drive in the stuff, and get stuck if there's more than a couple of inches of snow on the roads! The the railways can be stopped by frozen points and the local councils run out of grit for the road and the whole place nearly grinds to a halt. Guest HIltonfamily Posted December 30, 2001 Posted December 30, 2001 Hey! So it has stopped snowing, most of the travel bans are lifted and the strong winds haven't arrived yet. The snow is packing down so the depth seems less maybe 3 1/2 feet to 4 feet now. Did I mention that the sun is shinning? Around here in the winter time it stays grey for months on end so it's a real celebration when the sun is out. We're hoping that the cold temps stay around as that will help lake Erie to freeze and then the lake effect reduces........ Feeling a bit bummed about the whole thing yesterday......I don't really mind the snow. Everything looks so clean and white. When it is this cold (currently 18 degrees) the snow twinkles back like so many diamonds. But what is rough is when one of the kids is sick.....Asthma..... Anyway, my sister from NC did our "Eversure's C&S cache" yesterday. The roads in the park were ploughed so she just had to shuffel through the deep stuff. It's hidden on the side of a hill so she was able to body sled all the way down. Smiled all the while! I'de like to post a picture or two but still haven't figured out how. If somebody knows how just e-mail me and I'll send the picture to you to post. My sister is quite a photo buff with a very cool new digital (1.5 K christmas present) so I can get some from her. I just signed onto the boards and just started caching after christmas. If it stays sunny I get to go caching on the 31st Maybe you all should have snow caches up north. Guest treemoss2 Posted December 30, 2001 Posted December 30, 2001 OH YEAH!!! Got two caches this weekend up by Winter Park, Colorado. About two feet of snow to bushwack through to caches. My girlfriend fell through the ice into the marsh near one of them and the other one we had to dig like prairie dogs in a 40' swath trying to locate the cache because we didn't even note anything about the cache except the coordinates and knew not what we were even looking for (an ammo can). It looked like an eskimo wrestling area after we left. Quote

They got hit with 1-2 feet over the weekend, but the rest of cleveland was oddly untouched this time. The winds are just not coming from the right direction. Buffalo is stealing all of our snow!!! Guest geospotter Posted December 31, 2001 Posted December 31, 2001 I may have rounded a bit, but you're right. It's Mexico (the Barcelo Resort on the Riviera Maya to be exact). As picture indicates, it's much closer to the beach. Only a true geocacher would have bothered to check out those coordinates! I'll have to get better coordinates. Maybe I should set it up as a virtual cache! It's the best location on the two-mile beach. Quote

It occasionally snows on the outskirts of town (extreme north), but we can pretty much geocache year-round and not have to worry about winter-proofing caches or archiving them for the winter. Winter daytime temperatures range from the 50's to the 70's, perfect for hiking. That said, there is far less frequent geocaching done here in the Summer. Hey hamster, drive about twenty five miles north east along the lake shore and you will find that Painesville and the rest of lake county has about two feet. This was much to my suprize when I came home from south east Ohio for the holiday (we only had about 2 inches there) to find I could not get in my driveway. We have a good foot and a half of ice hanging all along our gutters. Fearless fell off the roof a couple years ago when the step ladder kicked out. So he's been a bit hesistant to get back up there. Instead we've just been watching the ice grow and the water seep in behind it I guess that's what happens when you've been snowed in too long...How warm is it in AU? DxChallenged Quote

Had to keep my car plugged in at night so it wouldn't turn into an ice chunk, people waved to everyone as it was so desolate that you were glad to see another human face and each day there were "flesh freezing" warnings.
